Tempe, Ariz. -- Standout performances by BYU sprinters Rhyan Atrice, Cade Lindahl and Mario Harper highlighted the Sun Angel Track & Field Classic Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium.

The meet was split into two parts, the open events in the beginning of the day and the premiere events starting in the evening.

In the open section of the men’s 400-meter dash, Atrice took second with a time of 47.69 while Harper took fourth in 48.05. In the premiere section, Lindahl took third overall with a time of 47.12.

“I thought we had some really good performances this week, I'm especially pleased with the sprinters,” BYU coach Mark Robison said. “It was a long day, and by the end of it a lot of us were just exhausted, but we saw some good things today."

In the premiere section of the men’s 100-meter dash, Fan Fan Charles took seventh in 10.69 seconds and Jason Hinds finished ninth with a time of 10.95. Charles took third in the open section of the men’s 200-meter dash with a time of 21.43. Lindahl came in seventh, finishing in 21.51. Hinds took 14th in the premiere section with a time of 22.23.

In the premiere section of the 800-meter run, Justin Hedin finished sixth overall with a time of 1:50.52. Senior Ryan Waite also competed in the event, but minor discomfort in his hamstring kept Waite from finishing the race.

Jonathan Brown took fifth in the open 1,500-meter run, finishing in 3:53.65. Jason Witt ran in the premiere section and took 12th, finishing in 3:49.94.

Daniel Carney took fourth place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:16.56. Brad Nye and Jacob Cosby took seventh and eighth, respectively, with times of 9:42.34 and 9:51.35.

In the 400-meter hurdles Korey Smith grabbed 15th place with a time of 58.25.

The Cougars’ 4x100-meter relay team of John Lamont, Jacob Arslanian, Hinds and Charles took third overall, finishing in 41.68.

In the high jump, Sam Rockwood took fifth overall, clearing 6-08.75 and Dakoda John took 10th in the event with a mark of 6-04.75.

BYU’s pole vaulters continued to impress, with Victor Weirich and Braydon Bringhurst both clearing the 17-foot mark. Weirich took first in the premiere section with a height of 17-07.00 while Bringhurst set a personal record, clearing 17-01.00 good for sixth place. In the open pole vault section, Kyle Brown took sixth place, clearing 15-09.25.

Jonathan Ferguson won the open section of the men’s long jump with a jump of 22-08.00. In the premiere section, John Glazier took third overall clearing a distance of 23-02.50 and Scott Matheson took sixth in the premiere section with a mark of 22-08.50. Matheson also competed in the triple jump, earning 11th place and jumping 46-02.75.

Winston Wilkinson took eighth in the premiere discus throw. He threw his best mark of 164-10 on his third attempt. Jacob Foutz and Aaron Clark competed in the open section, taking fifth and 10th place, respectively. Foutz’s best attempt went 158-07 and Clark’s top throw cleared 151-01.

On Friday night, Foutz and teammate Joseph Stull competed at the Mesa Classic at Mesa Community College, submitting personal best marks in the hammer throw. Stull set a new personal record with a mark of 53.82m while Foutz increased his personal best to 49.41m.

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU men’s track and field team heads to Tempe, Ariz., this weekend for the 34th Annual Sun Angel Track and Field Classic, hosted by No. 18 Arizona State.

BYU senior Ryan Waite will make his outdoor debut in the 800-meter run on Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium. Waite finished 13th overall in the 800 meters at the 2013 indoor national championships. He took 18th overall at the 2012 outdoor national championships.

“Waite has trained well over the past month, and he should have a good race,” head coach Mark Robison said. “There will be some good competition this weekend, ASU is in the top 20 and there will be some other good schools there, too.”

The Cougars are off to a good start this season, with a number of athletes who have already delivered performances strong enough to likely earn a spot at the NCAA regional meet. Last weekend it was Jared Ward and Tylor Thatcher who stole the spotlight, submitting personal records in the 10,000-meter run and joining BYU’s all-time list in the event.

Ward ran the race in 28:36.15, the third-best mark in BYU history. Thatcher finished with a time of 28:59.29, which moves him into eighth place all-time for the Cougars.

Robison said several other Cougar athletes have already shown similarly strong performances, and he expects to see steady improvement from many more as the season progresses.

“We’re always hoping to see improvement from week to week,” Robison said. “If we can stay healthy and have our guys make progress each week, we should have a very good season.”
