PROVO -- Senior Brooke Cadiente tallied nine RBI in a 5-5 doubleheader performance to lead Cougars past Utah State 6-1, 10-1 (5) at Miller Park, Friday. BYU improves to 14-7 on the season while the Aggies fall to 2-13. The Cougars are now a perfect 12-0 against the Aggies since the program's inception since 2000 and extend their current win streak to five games.

Cadiente accredited a new excitement to her career day as she went 5-5 with two triples, a home run, a double, a walk, four runs scored and 14 total bases. She hit for the cycle in her first four home at bats of the 2003 season.

"I had a lot of fun out there today," she said of her career performance.

In game one, got a quick 3-0 lead with a quick hit by junior Belinda Osborn. Freshman Ashlyn Russell reached on a fielder's choice to get Osborn out at second base. The Aggies intentionally walked junior Oli Keohohou and Cadiente made them pay with a triple to score Russell and Keohohou. Freshman Ianeta Lei singled up the middle to score Cadiente.

BYU tacked on one more run in the second off a solo home run to center field by sophomore Lauren Watson, her first of the season and the first home run of 2003 at Miller Park.

Utah State responded in the top of the fifth inning as junior Haven Vance scored off a single to left center from senior Aimee Johnson to bring the Aggies within three runs, 4-1.

Cadiente responded in the bottom the fifth inning with a two-run blast over the left field fence, her sixth of the season. Cadiente finished the game 3-3 with a single, triple, home run, four RBI, and two runs scored.

Senior Cynthia Fallowfield (2-2) picked up the win for the Cougars in six innings on the mound giving up three hits and striking out two batters. Leslie Higley (2-6) picked up the loss for the Aggies.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Cadiente kept her home tear going with a two-RBI double in her first at bat to score Keohohou and Watson. Freshman Ashlyn Russell brought Cadiente home with a double.

Freshman Ianeta Lei then smashed a two-run home run to score fellow freshman Hawaiian Russell giving the the Cougars a quick 5-0 lead after one inning.

"We've been working on coming out and taking control earlier in the game," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "It's really worked well for us the past five games and our pitchers do the rest."

Cadiente proved fierce in the second inning knocking in junior Kate Walker, who reached on a single, and sophomore Lauren Watson, who reached on a double, off a triple giving her four RBI for the straight consecutive game. Two batters later, Lei hit a double to score Cadiente giving the Cougars an 8-0 lead after two innings.

In the third inning, Keohohou tacked on another Cougar run off a bases-loaded walk from Cadiente, her fifth RBI of the game tying her own Cougar single-game RBI record shared with Jackie Ellis.

The Aggies scored in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 9-1 and then sophomore first baseman Katy Barnes hit her first career home run, a solo shot over the left field fence sealing the final score at 10-1 in five innings.

"It was the most exciting moment of my college career," Barnes said. "I felt ready to hit with no pressure when I got in there."

Eakin commented on solo-shot by Barns, "Katy (Barnes) works hard every day in practice and it's nice to see her hard work pay off."

Senior Mandy Flint (5-1) picked up the win in striking out six in five innings on the mound.

"Our pitchers have finally started to realize their potential," pitching coach Vaughn Avley said.

The Cougars will play the Aggies in a single game tomorrow at Gail Miller Park starting at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.byucougars.com

PROVO -- After 19 games on the road, the BYU women's softball team (12-7) will open home play this weekend against in-state foe Utah State. The Cougars will play a double-header against the Aggies on Friday starting at 1 p.m. and will play a single game again at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Riding a three game win streak, the Cougars look to keep their slate clean against the Aggies. Since the team was sanctioned by the University, BYU is a perfect 10-0 against their counterparts from Logan including a perfect 5-0 last season.

Live stats will be available for the game on the softball page at www.byucougars.com under the 2003 schedule. Family admission for the games is 10 dollars while students get in free with their All-sports card.

LAST WEEKEND

Playing in a tournament hosted by Fresno State, BYU got off to a rocky 0-3 start playing against host Fresno State, No. 1 UCLA and No. 15 DePaul. The Cougars hadn't played in two weeks because the Red Desert Classic hosted by the University of Utah in St. George had been cancelled completely due to inclement weather. BYU responded to the tough challenge and defeated Cal-Poly, St. John's and avenged a loss to Fresno State behind two home runs by All-American Oli Keohohou, including the game-winner with two out in the bottom of the seventh innings to seal a 6-4 win in front of a sell-out crowd.

NOTES:

Two-time First-team All-American Oli Keohohou leads the team in batting average (.377), hits (20), home runs (6), RBI (16) and slugging percentage (.812). Junior Kate Walker leads the team in doubles with four. Four players on the Cougar roster post an on base percentage of over .400 (Keohohou, Debbie Dodds, Brooke Cadiente, and Linsey Gerhauser). Cadiente is second on the team with home runs (5) and runs scored (14).
