SAN DIEGO -- In the opening game of the San Diego Classic, the BYU softball team fell short to the University of San Diego 4-3 in eight innings.
The Cougars dropped to 10-7, while the Toreros advanced to 10-15. With the loss the BYU versus USD all-time record is 4-3.
The Toreros were able to capitalize on three BYU errors in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars battled back to put their first run of the game on the board in the top of the fifth inning, and then tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth on a two-out two-run homer to left field by senior Kate Walker.
Neither team scored in the seventh inning, which propelled the game into extra frames.
BYU was unable to tally any hits in the eighth, and USD freshman Alicia Massei brought in the game-winning run with her sacrifice fly to left field to give the Toreros the 4-3 victory on their home field.
Offensively, Walker ended the night hitting 1-4, scoring one run and bringing in two RBI with her fifth homer of the season. Teammates Lauren Watson and Debbie Dodds also posted good performances batting 1-3 and 1-1, respectively. Dodds' hit was a extra base triple.
BYU pitcher Niki Andersen (5-3) got the loss on the mound, while USD pitcher Anna Russell (6-2) got the win. Andersen allowed only two hits and recorded five strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
The Cougars will play two games Friday against Dartmouth at 1 p.m. PT (2 p.m. MT) and Central Connecticut State at 3 p.m. PT (4 p.m. MT).
