Seniors Super in Sweep over Lobos

Image

PROVO -- BYU rode its departing seniors to a 9-8 and 16-1 sweep over New Mexico Saturday at Gail Miller Field. The Cougars improved to 36-17 and 11-5 in Mountain West Conference play while the Lobos fell to 22-28 and 3-15 in conference play.

The seniors' superb play over the two games kept BYU in a tie with Utah for second place in the MWC and finished off the home schedule with a victory.

Game one started as Andrea Ramirez got BYU started in the first with a lead-off double. The Cougars then loaded the bases before Daniella Urincho walked to plate Ramirez.

Ramirez put BYU on the board again in the second with a solo homer to center field. Emi Snow came around to score from second on a Lobo error. With two outs, Ashlyn Russell found herself in a rundown trying to steal second but Ianeta Le'i alertly took off from third and crossed home plate before Russell was tagged for the last out of the inning. The Cougars led 4-0 after two innings of play.

New Mexico struck back in the third with four runs of its own. Kristina Schmallen drove two in herself on a single to right. Lindsey Elcess followed with a double of her own to plate two more and even the score at 4-4.

BYU got a run back in the third on a Monica Gonzales sacrifice fly, but the Lobos struck back in the top of the fourth. A costly Cougar error that could have ended the inning ended up resulting in a Cassie Chavez grand slam to give New Mexico an 8-5 lead.

The Cougars added a pair in the fourth on a pair of singles from Urincho and Jodi Norton to cut the deficit to one. Courtney Nix doubled to bring home Norton to tie the game at eight after six innings.

The game looked to be heading into extra frames as BYU came up in the bottom of the seventh. Ramirez led off the inning with a double. Janna Anderson came in to pinch run for Ramirez and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Emi Snow. Le'i then hit a chopper in the gap to plate Anderson and give the Cougars the 9-8 victory. Le'i's single not only gave BYU the win, but extended her hit streak to 20 games.

In game two, the Cougars exploded for 10 runs on eight hits in the first. Le'i started the action-packed inning with a single - her 227th career hit - that made her the school's all-time hit leader and started the BYU hit parade. She capped off the outburst with a towering grand slam off the scoreboard in right field.

Krystle Chamberlain came around to score on a single from Snow in the third. Le'i added another two runs on a single and Norton walked to bring in the fourth run of the inning. Gonzalez singled to bring in the fifth run of the inning.

The Cougars added another run in the fourth when Lindi Kennedy walked to bring home their last run of the game.

Individual efforts by the departing seniors proved critical for BYU on the day. Summer Tobias pitched a complete game in the first game and stifled the Lobos through three innings in the second to improve her record to 19-8 on the season. Le'i was a combined four for six with her 18th homerun of the year to go along with seven RBI's. Russell was a perfect three for three with an RBI in the second game, while Paramore added three hits and Boyce-Humbert gave up just one hit in two innings of work.

After the game, possibly the best class in BYU softball history, Boyce-Humbert, Le'i, Paramore, Russell and Tobias, was honored. All five left their marks on the Cougar record books and their teammates and coaches.

"All these girls are tremendous ambassadors to the school and the sport," BYU coach Gordon Eakin said. "We'll miss them tremendously."

The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday May 2, when they take on UVSC in Orem. Start time is set for 4 pm.

Senior Week For Cougars

Image

PROVO -- In-state play continues for BYU as the Cougars head to Cedar City to take on Southern Utah for a Tuesday doubleheader before wrapping up their home season on Friday and Saturday.

The Cougars and Thunderbirds will kick the week off Tuesday at 1 p.m. Game two of their doubleheader will follow shortly after game one finishes.

After finishing a streak of seven consecutive games against in-state opponents against SUU, BYU (31-16, 8-4 MWC) will look to improve its conference record when it hosts Colorado State, Friday and New Mexico, Saturday. Friday's doubleheader starts at 5 p.m. while Saturday's twinbill is a 2 p.m. start.

The home games will be the final two for five BYU players, including three four-year starters. The Cougars will honor their departing seniors immediately following Saturday's doubleheader.

BYU split two games with SUU two weeks ago while sweeping the four games against New Mexico and Colorado State.

Both of BYU's final two home dates will start with a televised game. BYU TV will carry television coverage with Jay Monson doing the play-by-play story and Gary Sheide offering commentary.

The MWC second-place Cougars will look to gain ground on conference-leading San Diego State.
