PALM SPRINGS -- The BYU softball team combined for 18 hits during a Friday double header, but the 18 hits were not enough to over come Texas in nine innings, 5-4, or Kansas, 3-1.

The losses extend the Cougars’ losing streak to a season-high five games as they dropped to 6-9 on the season.

Against Kansas BYU’s three defensive errors allowed all three unearned runs to score, while the team struggled with getting timely hits against Texas.

Junior pitcher Christie Zinanti received the loss against Kansas. The right-hander struck out a season-high 11 batters, tying her career best, and was charged with three hits and three unearned runs.

Sophomore Jessica Purcell got the Cougars on the board first with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, her sixth homer on the season.

The Jayhawks answered right back in the top of the fourth. An error allowed a runner on and she advanced to second on the same error, when another fielding error on the following at-bat allowed the runner to score.

With a tied score, Zinanti walked two batters and a single advanced both runners, when an error allowed the lead runner to advance from third to home. Then with runners on first and third, a double steal allowed the runner on third to advance, giving Kansas a 3-1 lead.

Freshman Delaney Willard hit a single to left field in the sixth inning, but was left stranded when Kansas managed to grab the last outs of the inning. Sophomore Kristin Delahoussaye hit a leadoff single in the seventh, which was followed with freshman Tiffany Messerschmidt’s bunt single. Despite having two runners on base, the three, four and five-hole hitters were unable to produce any runs, ending the inning and the game.

Sophomore Paige Affleck threw the complete nine innings against Texas, allowing four earned runs off of five hits, striking out five batters.

Affleck gave up a two-run homer in the top of the second inning, putting the Cougars in a 2-0 deficit. BYU answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Purcell hit a deep sacrifice ball in center field, which was caught but the centerfielder tripped and allowed two runners to score.

With the game tied, senior Stephanie Hopkins blasted a two-run homer in the sixth inning to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Affleck walked a batter, but struck out at Longhorn and forced a ground out, before the nine-hole hitter blasted a home run over the left-center field wall to tie the game.

The Cougars were unable to generate a run in the bottom half of the inning, leaving junior Whitney Nix-Thomas, who pinch ran for freshman Coreen Lopez, on first base.

In the eighth inning the international tiebreaker was enacted, placing a base runner on second base. Affleck walked the first batter, but a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners, but recorded an out. The lead runner was caught in a run-down between third and home, and was tagged out by Purcell at the plate.

Another walk left the Longhorns with two runners on before a ground ball to third baseman junior Angeline Quiocho ended the Texas scoring threat. In the bottom half of the eighth BYU was stopped by three quick outs, leaving the game tied.

With a runner in scoring position, a ground ball stopped the leadoff batter but advanced the runner. A fielder’s choice conceded the run and gave Texas a 5-4 lead. Despite a sacrifice bunt and a hit batsman giving the Cougars runners on the corners, two pop outs ended the innings giving Texas a 5-4 win.

The Cougars look to snap their losing streak when they take on Tennessee Tech at 10 a.m. (PST) Saturday. Livestats are available at www.byucougars.com.
