Portland, Ore (Nov. 30, 2004)-- Senior guard Julie Sullivan's 11 points led the BYU women's basketball team to an easy 70-35 victory over the Portland Pilots, Tuesday.

Sullivan also contributed with a team high six rebounds as the Cougar team dominated from start to finish. BYU took a 15-6 lead 10 minutes into the game and never looked back. They had a 12-point, 29-17 advantage at the end of the first half.

It was more of the same in the second half as BYU outscored Portland 25-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second period to put the game out of reach.

"We defended really well tonight and took them out of their game," said BYU coach Jeff Judkins. "We wore them down in the second half as well. This is a huge road win for us."

The lopsided game gave coach Judkins an opportunity to play his entire bench providing some valuable playing time to his freshman players.

"We were able to play a lot of our freshmen, they needed to get some up and down experience on the court, and they did a good job for us," added Judkins.

Ambrosia Anderson led from the bench strength, scoring nine points and grabbing five boards. Freshmen Mary Martha Abell and Lauren Riley also got some good playing time with Riley picking up a season high 10 points followed by eight from Abell. Mallary Gillespie also played, finishing with four points and two rebounds. Overall, the Cougar bench contributed 40 points to the huge road win.

BYU finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field, and 71 percent from the free throw line. They outrebounded the University of Portland 47 to 29.

For the Pilots, who fall to 2-3 on the year, center Ashlee Orndorff led the way with a game-high 13 points and six rebounds. Portland shot a low 24 percent from the field, and went to the free throw line three times, making just one from the charity strip.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the season, and return home to host George Washington University on Monday, Dec. 6 in a 5:30 p.m., tip off. The game will air live on BYU-TV.

Previous Game Recap

Despite a strong team effort led by junior forward Ambrosia Anderson's 17 points coming off the bench, the Cougars women fell by three, 73-76 to the No. 24 ranked Arizona Wildcats. BYU trailed for most of the first half despite a run in the early minutes of the half. The visiting Arizona team took a 45-33 advantage at the break. The Cougars got behind again in the second half of action but kept cutting into the Wildcat lead until the very end when they had a change to go for three to tie the game. But a blistering defense by Arizona kept BYU from scoring in the final seconds. In the contest Danielle Cheesman tallied her eighth career double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Kristen Kolozwski also contributed in double figures with 13 points and three rebounds. Junior forward/guard Jennie Keele played in her first game after recovering from a broken foot injury suffered on the first day of practice this season.

2004-05 Cougar Notables

uThree all-conference performers in Julie Sullivan (Second Team), Danielle Cheesman and Ambrosia Anderson (Honorable Mention) return to the BYU team.

u Cougar fans will get to see five new faces on the roster that include three freshmen and one transfer from Auburn University. The freshmen are Mary Martha Abell, from Monroe, Louisiana, Mallary Gillespie, from Vineyard, Utah and Mountain View High School, and Lauren Riley, a 6-3 center from San Clemente, Calif. Dani Kubik is a sophomore center from Lawrenceville, Georgia. She played one season at Auburn and will be eligible to play for BYU beginning in December.

The Portland Pilots have compiled a 2-2 record and have one win and one loss at home so far this year. The team returns three starters, eight letterwinners and add seven newcomers to this year's roster. Toping the list in scoring is Jamie Medley a 5-11 senior forward who tallies 14.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. She's followed by Ashlee Orndorff who scores 10.8 points and grabs a team high 9.5 rebounds per game. As a team, the Pilots shoot 44 percent from the field and62 percent from the free throw line and are 18 of 51 from behind the arc.

Last Meeting: BYU and Portland met last in Provo during the 1998-99 season with the Pilots getting the 62-57 win. Portland has won the last four games with BYU and are 2-2 at home, 2-1 away and 0-1 when playing on a neutral court.

Head Coach - Jeff Judkins

Overall Record: 60-36, begins his fourth season at BYU.

Under Coach Judkins, the team has gone to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.

An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.

He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.

After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.

He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (24), Jordan (22), Jenna (20), Jaime (17), Jaxson (14).

Team's Practice Schedule/Media Interviews

The BYU team practices at the Marriott Center from 11 a.m., to 2 p.m., on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's. On Tuesday's , practice time is from 1 to 3 p.m., and from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m., on Thursdays.

What's Next

BYU returns for one more home game against George Washington who will be making their first trip to Provo and the Marriott Center. That game is on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m. It is scheduled to air live on BYU-TV. After that game, the Cougars will travel to Honolulu, Hawaii to play in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Invitational on Dec. 10 and 11. There they will battle Vanderbilt on Dec. 10 and hosts Hawaii on Dec. 11.
