Current Position - Assistant Women's Basketball Coach, 2011-present

  • Concluded his ninth year at BYU in 2019-20.
  • Since joining the coaching staff for the 2011-12 season, the Cougar team has posted seven 20+win seasons and has gone to the NCAA tournament five times, including a Sweet Sixteen finish during the 2013-14 season.
  • The team has also participated in two WNIT postseason appearances that saw the team advance to the Third Round during the 2012-13 campaign.
  • While at BYU, the team has also won one West Coast Conference regular-season title (2015-16) and three WCC tournament crowns (2018-19, 2014-15, 2011-12).
  • During his time at BYU, five players have been named Players of the Year, four have been named Defensive Players of the Year, three have been named Newcomers of the Year and at the end of the 2019-20 season, there were 28 all-conference player honorees

Ray Stewart joins the BYU women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach beginning the 2011-12 season. He brings 13-plus years of player development experience directing youth basketball private lessons, classes, camps and clinics.

Most recently he was the head girl’s basketball coach at Wasatch High School and the Director of Coaching and Skill Development at Utah Flight Basketball. He has also coached the boy’s program at Dos Pueblos High School in Santa Barbara and was an assistant men’s basketball coach at UVU (formerly UVSC) for one season.

From 1990-92, Stewart played for two years at the University of California Santa Barbara under legendary Coach Jerry Pimm where he averaged 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. Prior to his two years with the Gauchos, he played one season at BYU-Hawaii and his sophomore season at UVSC in 1989. At UVSC he averaged 16 points, 3.3 assists and 2.4 rebounds while averaging a school record 3.1 steals per contest. He received all-region and all-conference honors and was named the team’s outstanding player. After college Stewart played professionally in both Sweden and Brazil.

Stewart was a high school basketball All-American at Perth Amboy High School in New Jersey where he averaged 18.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.8 assists per game. He garnered all-state, all-county and all-league honors. He also lettered in baseball and football.

He and his wife Denise currently reside in American Fork with their four children: Sophie (12), Trey (10), and twins Maya and Malia, born in April 2011.

Stewart has a bachelor’s degree in behavioral management from Utah Valley University and has been working on a master’s degree in education.
