PROVO -- The BYU women's basketball team lost Thursday night to the New Mexico Lobos 51-64 before 9,583 fans that filled The Pit, the first loss for the Cougars in nine games when leading at halftime.

Both teams struggled from the field early on with the score tied at two after 3:15. For most of the first half the Cougars had a comfortable lead, with 11 points being the largest margin. Senior guard Julie Sullivan led BYU in the first half with 10 points. Lobos senior guard Mandi Moore cut the Cougar lead to just three points as the end of the half neared. Moore led the Lobos at the half with nine points.

"We came out aggressively the first 10 minutes of the first half, and then after that we hit a brick wall and we could never recover," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins.

Early in the second half, Abbie Letz hit a three point shot to give New Mexico the lead for the first time in the game. Despite out-rebounding the Lobos 45-39 in the game, the Cougars never recovered as the Lobo lead grew to as many as 14 points late in the game. New Mexico shot 38 percent from the field and 40 percent from beyond the arc in the second half compared to BYU's 23 percent in field goals and 20 percent from three-point range.

"We need to execute better on offense and defense on the road," Judkins said.

Sullivan had a team-high 14 for BYU, followed by senior forward Kristen Kozlowski's 10 points. New Mexico had three players in double figures, led by Lindsey Arndt with 12 points.

BYU falls to 10-6 on the season and 1-2 in the conference, while New Mexico improves to 13-2 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.

"We did some good things," said Judkins "but mentally, we broke down."

BYU continues on the road this weekend against another conference opponent Saturday in Colorado Springs, when the Cougars face Air Force (5-9, 0-1) at 2 p.m.

Previous Game Recap

In the second league game of the year, the Cougars stopped the Colorado State Rams dead in their tracks, 74-54.

The first half showed strong play with BYU leading by as much as 20 points. In a sudden burst of power Ambrosia Anderson made a steal, followed by a great block by Danielle Cheesman, which resulted in a three point field goal by Anderson with 6:40 remaining in the first half.

The Cougars ended the half 41-25, the most points CSU had given up in a first half all season. Leading individual total points in the first half was CSU forward Melissa Dennett. Mallary Gillespie, Kristen Kozlowski, and Melinda Johnsen came in second with 6 points each.

Starting out the second half, the Cougars remained strong. Julie Sullivan, Gillespie, Dani Kubik, and Cheesman all scored double figures, making this the fifth straight game where at least three BYU players have scored in double digits. CSU's Lindsay Thomas scored the highest with 18 points. Gillespie and Anderson both had two three-point field goals, the highest of the game. BYU ended the game with a 50.8 percent shooting average.

Player Injury Report

l Kali Taylor broke a finger in her left hand this week and will be out four to six weeks.

l Junior forward Jennie Keele will get a medical redshirt for the rest of this season. The injury she suffered to her foot on the first day of practice is not complete healed. She's only been able to play for a few minutes at a time.

About University of New Mexico

After the first week of MWC play, New Mexico is 1-0 with a home win over the Air Force Academy. Overall, they have compiled a 12-2 record and are 10-1 at home. Senior forward Lindsey Arndt leads the Lobos in scoring with 99.3 points and a team high 5.4 rebounds a game. About Air Force Academy

With one game played in league action, the Air Force Academy is at 5-9, 0-1 on the year. They lost at New Mexico last week in their conference opener. Two players currently score in double digits for the Falcons with Letricia Castillo toping the list, averaging 12.4 points and 4.4 rebounds a game. Teammate Alecia Steele follows contributing 11.9 points and grabbing a team-high 7.0 boards a game. As a team, the Air Force is shooting 39percent from the field and 65 percent at the free throw line. When shooting from behind the arc, they shoot 31 percent. Head Coach - Jeff Judkins

Overall Record: 68-40, begins his fourth season at BYU.

Under Coach Judkins, the team has gone to back-to-back NCAA appearances as well as to the title games of the MWC Championships, winning the title game in 2001-02.

An all-state selection in basketball, football and baseball, Judkins played basketball for the University of Utah Utah from 1974-78. While playing for the Utes, he helped the team win one conference championship and two berths in the NCAA Tournament.

He was a second-team academic All-American and three-time first-team District VII academic selection. Judkins earned three first-team All-WAC honors and was a member of the 1977 United States World Games team that captured the gold medal.

He played five years in the NBA for the Boston Celtics, Portland Trailblazers, Detroit Pistons and the Utah Jazz. He was a second-round pick by the Celtics in 1978, the same year the Celtics selected Larry Bird with the sixth pick overall.

After his NBA career, he returned to the U of U in 1989, and remained with the men's program for 10 years. Judkins, a Salt Lake City native, graduated from Utah in 1978 with a degree in health and physical education. He is a member of the Utah Sports Hall of Fame and the Crimson Club Hall of Fame.

He and his wife Mary Kay, are the parents of five children: Jessica (24), Jordan (22), Jenna (20), Jaime (17), Jaxson (14).
