Cougars Top Mountaineers in Exhibition

PROVO -- In the team's second and last exhibition game before the 2007-08 regular season, the BYU women's basketball team beat Eastern Oregon 53-41 in Provo Saturday to finish the exhibition season 2-0.

BYU's Mallary Gillespie-Carling led all scorers with 10 points in the game. She also recored two assists, two steals, and three rebounds in the game. Lauren Riley-Varley racked up 10 boards in the game as well.

"It was a hard game tonight, but I thought we played a little bit better," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "This is what exhibition games are about, we played two teams who played us totally differently. I'm very happy with our defense, though. This team could be one of the best teams I've coached defensively."

The Cougars came out strong in the first half, scoring 32 points with 15 of those coming from behind the arc. The team also recorded 12 assists to go along with its five first-half threes and 43.3 percent shooting from the field. BYU entered the locker room on a 10-point run, up 32-18.

In the second half the Cougars extended their largest lead of the game to 20 points. The Mountaineers were able to pull back to within 11 twice, but were never able to produce enough to reduce the Cougar lead to single digits. All 17 players on the roster also played in the half.

The 2007-08 season will officially start for the Cougars at UC Santa Barbara on Friday. The team will also play at Arkansas State before returning to Provo for the home opener against Fresno State on Nov. 17.
