PROVO -- In the first of a two-game stint in Connecticut, the BYU women's basketball team evened its record at 3-3 on the year with a 80-34 loss at No. 2 Connecticut Thursday, and will look to get back on top at Sacred Heart on Saturday.
Junior Shawnee Slade tallied her 12th career double-figure performance against the Huskies with 10 points. It was her second double figure performance this season. True freshman Coriann Wood recorded a season and career-high eight points off the bench in the contest as the Cougars' second leading scorer of the game. She also recorded a season and career high with five rebounds.
"We're better than we played tonight," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "I know we're going to learn from this and are going to get better."
The high-octane Huskie offense propelled UCONN to a 20-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game, and the home-team never looked back. With the win, UCONN was able to maintain its remarkable season in which the Huskies have toppled their opponents by an average of more than 40 points a game in six wins. Freshman Maya Moore led all scorers with 17 points off the bench in only 15 minutes of play.
"UCONN is a great team and is coached by an excellent coach," Judkins said. "UCONN is very physical and aggressive. Our strength is our defense, but we just couldn't defend them tonight. They do everything well."
Sacred Heart is currently 2-3 on the year and has won its last two games. The game will be a 2 p.m. EST tip-off and will be available on BYU Radio as well as KOVO radio. The Cougars will then return home to host New Mexico State on Dec. 5 at 4:30 p.m. at the Marriott Center in Provo.
