LARAMIE -- The BYU women's basketball team fell to 13-14 on the year and 7-8 in Mountain West Conference play with a 68-34 loss at Wyoming Wednesday.
Senior Ashley Cheesman scored nine points and brought down seven rebounds for team highs in both categories. The Cougars shot 28.3 percent from the field (13-46), 18.8 percent from the three-point line (3-16), and 41.7 percent from the free-throw line (5-12).
"Wyoming is a very good team, and they're playing great right now," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said after the game. "Wyoming is a team that knows how to win, and that's what a veteran team can do for you. We didn't come out with intensity. We didn't take care of the ball early, and they out-hustled us."
Senior center Lauren Riley-Varley was out of action Wednesday due to a sprained ankle suffered in Monday's practice. Junior Cassie King got her first start of the season filling in for Riley-Varley, and freshman Megan Marks also saw significant minutes to try to fill the hole in the paint.
Wyoming led 34-17 at the end of the first half, becoming only the third team to hold BYU to under 20 points in the opening period. Cheesman had five points and five rebounds at the break to lead BYU in both categories. The Cowgirls hit 36.4 percent of their shots from the floor and pulled down 25 boards in the first half to the Cougars' 27.3 percent shooting and only 16 rebounds.
The first ten minutes of the second half became a much tighter contest. Wyoming had not increased its lead, but BYU had not decreased the Cowgirl lead either. Despite the Cougars' best efforts, however, the Cowgirls got hot and ran away with the second half and the game.
BYU will wrap up its conference schedule on Senior Night at the Marriott Center Saturday at 5:30 against TCU. The MWC Tournament will then be held the following week in Las Vegas, seedings for which will be announced after conference play ends Saturday.
