LAS -- The season ended for the BYU women's basketball team (13-16, 7-9) Wednesday against New Mexico (18-12, 9-7) in a 59-41 loss in front of a Lobo-friendly crowd in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Seniors Mallary Gillespie-Carling, Lauren Riley-Varley, and Ashley Cheesman finished their collegiate careers with huge efforts against the Lobos. Gillespie-Carling was the only Cougar in double figures with 14 points and jumped to 11th place on BYU's all-time scoring list. Riley-Varley pulled down three offensive boards and scored six points, and Cheesman helped keep Dionne Marsh, UNM's leading scorer, to only nine points.
"We didn't play very well the first half, but I was really proud of my team in the second half," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said after the loss. "I'm proud of this team because we've been through a lot this year. We lost some close games, but I've always felt this team has worked hard. I told the team, and I really meant it, that these seniors have always been very classy, and I'm really proud of them."
The Lobos built themselves a 13-point lead ten minutes into the game at 21-8 on 58 percent shooting from the floor and 4-6 shooting from behind the arc. Gillespie-Carling was 2-3 from the three-point line, but the Cougars were only 3-11 from the field as a team with seven turnovers.
BYU was able to prevent UNM from gaining much more of a lead in the remainder of the half, but was unable to close the gap. The first period ended with the Cougars trailing 17-33 after New Mexico drained a triple with only seconds left in the half, and BYU entered the locker room shooting 24 percent from the field with 13 turnovers.
Gillespie-Carling had the Cougars' first eight points of the second half on back-to-back three-point buckets and an 18-foot jumper from the right wing. BYU's defense also became much more scrappy in the second half as the Cougars forced multiple jump balls and back-to-back shot clock violations on the Lobos.
No matter how many loose balls BYU fought for, it was not enough to combat the 25 turnovers and 33 points off of turnovers the Cougars gave up. Bright spots Brigham Young included outrebounding the Lobos 35-29 and recording 14 points off the bench to UNM's 10.
Judkin's post-season record falls to 13-11 with the loss. Despite the difficult 2007-08 season, he will return four players with significant starting experience and more who contributed significant minutes when the 2008-09 rolls around in October.
