PROVO -- The Cougars returned to the Marriott Center Wednesday and were led by Shawnee Slade and Coriann Wood as they defeated the Weber St. Wildcats 76-69.

“I’m happy for the win,” said BYU coach Jeff Judkins. “I thought we played a really good start of the second half and came out with the intensity that we should’ve come out with the whole game. It was a good night for them tonight, it was a good win and hopefully we’ll just get better and better.”

Cassie King and Mindy Nielson joined Slade and Wood as Cougars with double-digit scores on the night, which marks the second game in a row and the third game this season BYU has had four players in that category. Slade led the Cougars with 16 points with Wood posting 15, both contributing to BYU’s 49 percent shooting mark on the night – which the Cougars have shot for back-to-back games.

After a fairly slow first eight minutes, Wood lit the fire with a momentum-building layup to start a 10-point streak for the Cougars. BYU kept the lead until the 2:14 mark, where Sarah Conner’s three-pointer pushed Weber State ahead 31-28. The Cougars fought down to the wire, but Slade’s jumper just before the buzzer wasn’t enough to overcome the Wildcats’ 33-32 lead at the half.

BYU started quickly in the second half, scoring 14 points before Weber St. connected with the basket once, resulting in a 46-33 score at the 14:49 mark. After two fouls and three turnovers from the Cougars in a two-minute period, the Wildcats pulled together to come back, although not enough to have a lead the rest of the half. In spite of 15 fouls and 16 turnovers, BYU came out ahead at the final.

Keilani Moeaki joined Wood with each having five rebounds on the night, adding to the other team rebounds for a total of 32 on the night. Overall, Slade and Wood were the driving forces behind the Cougars, with a combined 12-21 shooting percentage, a trio of three-pointers and a perfect 4-4 free throw record.

“I think Slade is really playing well right now,” Coach Judkins said. “She’s really playing her best basketball right now and she hit some big shots. And Wood is shooting the ball with a lot of confidence and gives us a big lift. She comes in and stretches the defense. ”

The Cougars advance to 6-2 on the season while the Wildcats drop to 3-5.

Utah State is next on BYU’s schedule, with a 3 p.m. game this Saturday in the Marriott Center. The game will be broadcast live on BYUTV and BYU Radio, and a live stat feed can also be accessed on the schedule page at www.byucougars.com/basketball_w/.
