COLORADO SPRINGS -- The BYU women’s basketball team (10-6, 2-0) continued their conference win streak with an 88-60 victory over the Air Force Falcons, Saturday.

"I thought our starters did a great job today," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "We did some nice things and really took advantage of our height. Haley (Hall) played really, really well and was literally perfect today. I also liked that Jennifer Hamson played another awesome game and it was nice to see Kim (Parker) and Stephanie (Vermunt) play a great game."

Senior guard Haley Hall’s 18 points led all players on the night with a perfect 4-for-4 performance from behind the 3-point line and 6-for-6 from the field.

Teammates Jennifer Hamson, Alexis Kaufusi and Stephanie Vermunt joined Hall in double digits with 14, 10 and 13 points, respectively.

Hamson’s points were a new career-high and Vermunt’s points were her third double-figure performance of the season.

The Falcons took a quick 3-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game but the Cougars, led by six straight points from Hamson, took the lead themselves and never looked back.

BYU held the 16-point advantage as they left the court for halftime with Hamson’s 12 points leading the way. The Cougars shot 58 percent from the field in the first half compared to 38 percent shooting from the Falcons.

Three more players contributed double-figures points in the second half to join Hamson as the Cougars extended their lead and take the win.

Up next for the Cougars is a matchup against instate rival Utah in the Marriott Center on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. MT. The game is scheduled to air world-wide on BYUtv.

-For the second time on the year, four Cougar players scored in double figures with Hall’s (18), Hamson’s (14), Vermunt’s (13 and Kaufusi' (10).

-The Cougars finished the game with a total of 88 points marking the fourth time this season that the team has scored at least 80 points while winning all four contests. The point output is the second best on the year.

-BYU improved to 9-0 when leading at the half, and 8-4 when making at least five three pointers in the game. Against the Air Force Academy they made 10 treys.

-For the first time this year the rebounds were equal, with each team grabbing 33.

-Haley Hall led all scorers with 18 points, 12 were from behind the arc. The points tie for season highs. In the game, Hall was perfect from the field going 6-6 while dishing out seven assists, grabbed four rebounds and had two steals in 29 minutes.

-Jennifer Hamson tallied 14 points in the game for new season and career highs. The double-digit outing is her third on the year and in her career.

-Stephanie Vermunt ‘s 13 points are her third double figure game of the year and her career.

-Jazmine Foreman dished out nine assists for team and game highs. The assists tie for season highs.

BYU’s women’s basketball team (8-6, 0-0) begins the 2011 Mountain West Conference season with two games this week. The Cougars host UNLV (7-7, 0-0), Wed. Jan. 5 at 7 p.m., then travel to Colorado Springs to take on the Air Force Academy (5-8,0-0) on Sat., Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.

UNLV

Heading into the first week of the MWC season, UNLV has compiled a 7-7 record winning their last two games. The Rebels return all five starters from last year’s team that went 13-18, 6-10 overall and finished in 7th place in conference play. Sophomore guard/forward Kelli Thompson is the lone Rebel player scoring in double digits with a 14.5 point average while grabbing 2.9 boards per game. Junior forward Jamie Smith is at the top of the list in the rebound category grabbing 8.7 a contest. Mia Bell has the most assists on the squad with 64 total while Thompson gets the nod in steals for the team with 17 to date. Kathy Olivier enters her third season at the helm of UNLV’s women’s basketball program.

BYU and UNLV played twice during last season’s league race with the Cougars picking up both wins. The two team’s opened MWC play in Las Vegas where BYU came away with a 71-61 win. In Provo on Feb. 6, the Cougars picked up the 76-60 victory.

AIR FORCE ACADEMY

The Air Force Academy has compiled a (5-8, 0-0) record to date. They open up MWC play on the road with a game at Utah on Wed. Jan. 5 before hosting the Cougars on Saturday afternoon. The team returns 10 letterwinners and two starters and are under new head coach Andrea Williams. Two Falcon players are scoring in double figures for the team led by senior guard Raimee Beck who tallies 13.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She’s followed by sophomore forward Kelsey Berger who contributes 10.4 points and 2.9 boards a contest. Dymon James leads the way in the rebound category grabbing 7.9 boards a game. Megan Muniz has the most assists on the team with 54 while Jamela Satterfield records the most steals with 28 to date.

Last Meeting

These two league foes met twice during the 2009-10 conference schedule with BYU capturing both wins. The first matchup was played in Provo where the Cougars captured the 77-46 win. In the second meeting, BYU defeated the Air Force Academy 78-53 in Colorado Springs.
