PROVO -- The BYU men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Mountain West Conference foe UNLV, Friday night. Both squads improve to 2-0 in dual meet action this season.
The men's team won eight of 13 events to beat the Rebels 143-98. The victory extends the BYU men's dual meet winning streak to 18 straight victories, dating back to the 1999-2000 season. The women's squad won eight of 13 events to win 144-97.
Junior Gary Tan won the 200 I.M. The Olympian from Singapore won the the 200 I.M. by a margin of five seconds and was a part of the winning 400 free relay team. Brian Sorensen won the 50 free in an event which saw the first three spots go to BYU swimmers with times of one-one hundredths of a second apart: 21.22, 21.22, and 21.23 respectively. Jeffrey Mason won the 100 free and was part of the winning 400 free relay squad. Sophomore Christian won the 200 breast and freshman Saul Stephens won the 200 back.
"We swam very well after even after losing the first three events," said men's head swim coach Tim Powers. "We showed lots of character, the sprinters came through for us tonight."
On the women's side, junior Courtnee Adams won the 100 free and was a part of the first place 400 free relay . Adams also set new pool and altitude records with her time of 50.88. Heidi Lietz won the 50 free and was also a part of the 400free relay squad. Sophomore Tamber Covington won the 400 I.M. Junior Amanda Grant won the 100 breast. Freshman top recruit Nichole Burrows was part of both winning relay teams.
"It was a great meet against a great team," said women's head swim coach Stan Crump. "The turning point in the meet was when Adams won the 100 free. The breaststroke did very well for us in the end. We were much more energized than we were last week at Utah."
For the divers, junior Tina Morrow won both the 1-meter event. Senior Viraj Patil won the 3-meter event while sophomore Justin Beardall won the 1-meter event.
Both teams will host Pacific next Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. in the Richards Building pool.
