Cougars Finish Fall Season

NORTHRIDGE -- The Matador Invitational ended with a strong showing by the BYU women’s tennis team. Sophomore Elle Carney and freshman Romina Nedakovic represented the Cougars in the final round of the tournament in singles and doubles respectively.

Carney edged out a player from Fresno Pacific in three sets to start the tournament. She then had a decisive victory over the No. 1 seed in the bracket, UC-Berkeley’s Asagi Onaga, 6-3, 6-2 before facing teammate Nedakovic in the semifinals. Carney dropped the first set but came back to win the second and third to secure a place in the finals. She forced the match to three sets but finally fell to Cal State Northridge’s Nina Jaworowski.

The Cougars struggled in the top bracket with three BYU players losing their first match. In the consolation round, junior Chie Hayasaka beat her Loyola Marymount opponent before losing to Pepperdine’s Jillian Braverman in two sets.

In doubles play, Nedakovic teamed up with Pepperdine’s Tania Rice and downed pairs from Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State Northridge to earn a spot in the final round. The duo lost to a different Cal State Northridge team in the finals 8-4.

Cougar pair Hayasaka and Kristina Doerr handily defeated their Loyola Marymount challengers 8-3 but then lost to Boise States’ Lauren Megale and Pichittra Thongdach 8-0.

The women’s team will resume play in January when it begins the regular season.
