Penn State Opens with Sweep Over Rice

PROVO -- In its season-opening home match of the season, the BYU women's volleyball team defeated Ohio State 3-1 (32-34, 30-28, 30-23, 30-26) in the first day of the BYU Mizuno Classic presented by Courtyard Marriott at the Smith Fieldhouse.

"We wanted to win this match," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We were tight in the beginning, but loosened up and really started to play well down the stretch."

A crowd of 2,071 watched a match filled with great defensive play, numerous long rallies and timely plays by BYU. The Cougars (5-3) were led by three players with double-digit kills on the night. Kim Wilson led the BYU hit parade with 13 kills, followed by Carrie Bowers and April Varner with 11 kills each.

Lauren Richards played a stellar overall game as she set career highs with five aces and five blocks. She also dished out 41 assists, with nine digs, seven kills and a match-high .417 hitting percentage.

"Lauren loves to compete," Lamb said. "She's dynamic. She made some really good plays at crucial times and did a great job serving."

The Cougars fell behind early in the first game and the Buckeyes' lead peaked at 8-3. BYU would chip into the Ohio State (3-2) lead and tied the game for the first time at 13-13. The Cougars would take their first lead at 20-19 on an ace from Richards. The game would go back-and-forth from there, but Heather Whalen and Stacey Gordon ended the game with back-to-back kills.

The second game was another close one that see-sawed between the two teams. The Cougars were out-hit .286 to .250, but BYU was buoyed by timely aces and blocks to spur them to the win.

BYU, behind the strong serving of Richards, started the third game on fire, reeling off the first five points. The Cougars' early lead would bulge to seven at 8-1. Gordon kept the Buckeyes in the game and had five kills to draw them within 8-5 of the Cougars. BYU would effectively shut Gordon down for the rest of the game as she failed to register another kill. The game was sealed by a Laura Nielsen kill.

Game four saw both teams scrap for points as each team traded sideouts. Neither team led by more than three points until the Cougars, on the strength of a Bowers kill and a Lindsey Lewis-Hartsock ace, went on a decisive 4-0 run to take a 27-23 lead. Wilson and Nielsen ended the match with a block on Whalen.

Uila Crabbe led the defense with 14 digs and Nielsen set a season-high and led the match with eight blocks. Wilson also put up 10 digs for her second career double-double.

BYU contained Buckeye All-American Gordon by holding her to a .236 hitting percentage and 22 kills. On the match BYU held a team blocks advantage of 15.5-10.5.

On Saturday, BYU will face Rice at Noon, before concluding the tournament against No. 8 Penn State at 7:30 p.m. In the other match of the day Rice will face Ohio State at 5 p.m.

"We need to play well against Rice," Lamb said. "They've got some really good outside hitters. We'll start to think about Penn State after that match."

Earlier in the day, No. 8 Penn State (8-0) opened tournament play with a 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-14) sweep of Rice (6-3).

No. 8 Penn State Defeats Rice in BYU Mizuno Classic Opener

PROVO, Utah -- In the first match of the BYU Mizuno Classic, No. 8 Penn State defeated Rice 3-0, led by senior opposite hitter Erin Iceman's strong performance of 14 kills.

Rice came out strong in the first game, scoring early with attacks from junior outside hitter Rebeca Pazo. The Owls held tough blocks against Penn State to keep the lead at 12-6. Junior Lindsey Carter also helped Rice maintain the lead with four kills in the first game.

Penn State cut the lead and slowly made their way back with a key block by Iceman and freshman Cassy Salyer. Tying the score at 26, the Nittany Lions kept attacking the Owls' defense to finish the game at 30-27.

The second game stayed close in the beginning with Rice taking the lead at 7-5, with kills by sophomore Erica Scott. The Lions capitalized on Owl mistakes to take the lead at 19-17. Junior Ashley Pederson and Iceman helped Penn State to another game win, scoring the last several points.

The third game, Penn State finished off strong with several serving aces and Rice struggled to put any offensive run together. The Lions closed the match at 30-14.

Iceman and Pederson led Penn State with 14 and 12 kills respectively and sophomore setter Sam Tortorello finished with 42 assists and 11 digs.

Pazo led Rice with a double-double performance, 14 kills and 14 digs. Sophomore setter Kristina Hogan finished the match with 32 assists and six digs.

Weekly Release #3 - Cougars to Host BYU Mizuno Classic

Image

BYU to Make Home Debut Against Ohio State, Rice and No. 8 Penn State

PROVO -- After two consecutive weeks on the road to open its season, the BYU women's volleyball team is home Friday and Saturday to host the BYU Mizuno Classic presented by Courtyard Marriott. Ohio State, Rice and No. 8 Penn State will take part in the two-day tournament.

BYU (4-3) will face Ohio State (3-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, and on Saturday the Cougars will take on Rice (6-2) at Noon and Penn State (7-0) at 7:30 p.m.

"With back-to-back road trips to open the season, we've been a little road weary," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "But we're excited to be home and play in front of our fans."

Sophomore outside hitter Kim Wilson is coming off a stellar performance against Saint Louis last week, when she recorded a career-high 29 kills. She also posted career highs of five assists and 13 digs, en route to being the only Cougar named to the SMS Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational All-Tournament team.

This week, the Cougars face stiff competition in Ohio State, Rice and Penn State. While Penn State is the No. 8 team in the nation, Ohio State is just outside the top 25, while Rice has enjoyed quality wins over San Diego State and Purdue.

"As the season goes on and as we approach conference play, we have to keep raising our level of play," Lamb said. "That's why we schedule quality opponents each year, and this year is no different.

"In the end that might give us a couple of more losses than we want, but I want to be in the Final Four, and that's what we're building towards."

Other matches in the tournament will see Penn State vs. Rice on Friday at 5 p.m. and Rice vs. Ohio State on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Cougars will have their match against Ohio State televised on KBYU-TV and BYUTV, while their match against Penn State will be available via BYU-Radio. Additionally, both matches will be available online. There will be a video/audio stream of the match against the Buckeyes and an audio stream of the match against the Nittany Lions. Links to these matches will be available via the BYU women's volleyball Web site at www.byucougars.com or or by clicking here.
