STOCKTON, Calif. – Preston Jenkins, Kelly Hatanaka and Cameron Lindsay placed top-three in two events each, helping the BYU swim team earn 13 top-three times at the Pacific Invite on Nov. 16-18.

"Overall, we swam well and most important we improved from last meet," BYU head coach John Brooks said. "I still want the team to get up and continue to improve, get-up and race."

Overall, the BYU men’s team took third place with a score of 540, behind the University of Denver at 980 and University of the Pacific with 726. PROVO, Utah – Senior John Pearce won in No. 5 singles to clinch a 4-1 victory for BYU tennis over No. 50 Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon at the Indoor Tennis Courts.

"The main thing that I was pleased with at the start of the match is that we won the doubles point because of lines two and three, but we had match point in line one," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "It was a great start on every position and set a good tone of being ready to play. They are undefeated in conference play and have only lost three other times. They are well-coached and have lots of talent. We came out ready to go. Our goal is to get first sets in the positions, and we got that in half the matches starting out. I'm excited for our guys today."

BYU (17-6, 6-2 WCC) came out ready to compete and earned the doubles point against Loyola Marymount (15-4, 5-1 WCC). SANTA CLARA, Calif. – BYU men’s tennis fell 4-3 in its final league match of the weekend to Santa Clara at the Degheri Tennis Center.

"Santa Clara is a tough team out on their courts-- they played well and fought hard at every position," BYU head coach Brad Pearce said. "Congratulations to them. The positive take away from today's loss is that we competed so hard. We felt capable of coming home 3-0 after this trifecta, and we had a match point for the win to do it and were right there. Those will start going our way as we learn from them and make adjustments. I'm proud of the way this team competes."

Utah tops BYU in annual relay meet

Image

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah topped the BYU swim and dive team winning 13 out of 15 relay races on Friday night.

“It is always a fun meet, but we have a lot of work to do,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “It was the first time that we had to transition from 25-meters to 25-yards, but the team responded to the transition very well.”

After the Utes won the first relay of the day, the Cougars fought back and won the second event in the men’s 150-yard fly relay with a time of 1:09.00.

In the only event of the meet that counted towards the regular season standing, BYU took a close second to the Utes. Senior Payton Sorenson led off the Cougars in the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay with the fastest split time of the meet at 45.50.  Senior Preston Jenkins anchored the team, swimming the fastest of any in the fourth leg with a time of 45.57. The Cougars completed the event with a time of 3:04.77.

The BYU dive team not only competed in its regular diving events but also as swimmers. The BYU co-ed dive team took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:53.97.  The Cougar dive team will travel up to the Ute Natatorium again in December for the Utah Diving Invitational.

The Cougars have a week break before traveling to Grand Junction, Colorado, for the Mesa State Invite at the Colorado Mesa University. The invite starts Friday, Oct. 6, at 5 p.m. MDT and continues on Saturday Oct. 7, at 9 a.m. MDT.

BYU to face Utes in Relay meet

Image

PROVO, Utah – After completing its Blue and White meet this past weekend, the BYU swim and dive teams will travel to Salt Lake City on Friday for a relay meet against the University of Utah at 5 p.m. in the Ute Natatorium.

“This relay meet is one of the more exciting meets to come to and watch for spectators,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Relays are always fun and a lot of athletes get to participate. There is no score, so there is no pressure on either team. It is a way to showcase each team’s talents and abilities.”

The meet will include freestyle relays, as well as co-ed relays and many others. Even the divers will compete and swim in a relay. While the 4x100 meter freestyle relay will be the only event that counts towards national rankings, the meet will be the first time in the 2017-2018 season that the Cougars will compete against another school.

BYU will face Utah twice more this season at the Ute Natatorium. On Dec. 1 the dive team will compete at the Utah Diving Invitiational and then on Jan. 27, 2018, both the swim and dive teams will compete against the Utes.
