Lyday Receives Cougar Club Competitor Award

PROVO -- Senior guard Terrell Lyday received the Competitor Award Wednesday at the 2001 Cougar Club Athletic Awards Banquet. Lyday was one of 14 student-athletes and two teams to be recognized at the annual banquet.

The Competitor Award is given to the male and female athletes who best demonstrate the competitive spirit of desire, dedication, and determination that leads them to the top of competition and serves as an inspiration to both teammates and fans. Junior gymnast Kelly Parkinson joined Lyday as this year's recipients.

This is the second time Lyday has been honored by the Cougar Club. He received the Crowd Pleaser Award at last year's banquet.

Terrell Lyday -- Competitor Award

Senior Terrell Lyday has had an impressive impact on the BYU basketball program during his two-year career in Provo. The 6-foot-3 guard helped the Cougars achieve back-to-back 20-plus win seasons and a Mountain West Conference championship.

Athletic with a smooth jumper, Terrell is a scorer who can create his own shot, finish inside and knock down the three-point shot. Terrell's competitive presence helped inspire his teammates to success. BYU had a 46-20 record with Terrell on the court, including a dominating 29-2 mark in the Marriott Center. Terrell reached double figures in 30 of 33 games this year and 60 of 66 games in his career. He scored 20 or more points in 19 games and more than 30 points on three occasions.

A transfer from Fresno City College, Terrell followed his strong junior season with an outstanding senior campaign while leading the Cougars to a MWC championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. Terrell earned All-MWC First Team honors this season after being named the MWC Newcomer of the Year last year.

After helping BYU win this year's MWC Tournament Title, Terrell was selected to the MWC All-Tournament Team for the second straight season, joining Michael Smith (1987, 89) and Gary Trost (1991, 92) as the only Cougars to earn the honor twice. Terrell scored a season-high 32 points in the MWC Tournament semifinal win over Wyoming and averaged a team-best 22.7 points in BYU's three MWC Tournament wins. He made 52.6 percent from the field, including 75 percent (9-12) from three-point range, and 95 percent (19-20) from the line for the week.

After totaling 565 points last year (17.1 ppg), Terrell averaged 16.4 points this season (540 points) to became only the fourth transfer to score 1,000 points in a two-year BYU career. Terrell's 1,105 career points ranks 27th all-time at BYU despite playing only two years. Only seven Cougars have ever scored more points during their junior and senior seasons.

A record-breaking three-point shooter, Terrell made a team-leading 60 triples this year to add to the 67 (fourth best at BYU) he made as a junior. He owns the school record for making a three in 21 consecutive games and also has the third and fourth longest streaks of 15 and 14 games. Overall, he made a trey in 61 of 66 games as a Cougar and made two or more threes in 36 games.

He was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 13 Second Team after finishing third among MWC players in scoring during league games. A native of Fresno, California and a sociology major, he leaves BYU tied for seventh in career scoring average at 16.7 points per game. He also averaged 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game over his two seasons.
