Madness Scrimmage Tips Off 2002-03 Season
PROVO, Utah (Oct. 12, 2002 -- It was the Travis Hansen-Kevin Woodberry show during the men's basketball scrimmage at Midnight Madness early Saturday morning in Provo. The annual late-night scrimmage marked the beginning of team practices for the upcoming 2002-03 season.
Three Hansen dunks--two lobbed by Woodberry--brought the crowd to its feet. Hansen then returned the favor by tossing a baseline oop to his 6-foot point guard who threw it down in the closing seconds.
Hansen, the lone senior, finished the eight-minute scrimmage with 11 points and four rebounds. Woodberry, JC transfer from Dixie State College, had five points in addition to his three assists. The duo led the blue team to a 27-21 win over the white team.
Mark Bigelow led the white team in scoring with six points including a dunk of his own. He was helped by the "Brazilian Connection," guard Luiz Lemes and big man Rafael Araujo. Lemes scored five points and Araujo chipped in four.
Coach Steve Cleveland said it's all fun and games for now but there is much work ahead for the Cougars. "This is a fun night for the students," Cleveland said. "Tomorrow we'll have a serious practice and get going for real."
Prior to the scrimmage, Ricky Bower and Jennifer Leitner defeated Travis Hansen and Erin thorn in the two-ball competition.
