BYU starts strong at first day of Pacific Invite

STOCKTON, Calif. – Jake Taylor and Rainer Ng led BYU on the first day of the Pacific Invitational Friday night at the Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, California.

“It was a good meet and we were able to see a lot of our swimmers improve their times,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Some of our guys were tired and sick this week, but people raced and we really battled. Connor Stirling, as a freshman, had a really great 50 free. Rainer was also sick leading up to the meet, but the way he performed while being sick and battling back was very impressive.”

A team comprised of Taylor, Ng, Stephen Richards and Payton Sorenson finished first in the 200-yard medley relay, posting a 1:31.10.

Taylor then took first in the men’s 100 backstroke, finishing in 48.81. Ng took second in the event for BYU, clocking a 49.39.

Richards finished the men’s 100 breaststroke event in 57.46, good enough for third place.

BYU placed two swimmers in the men’s 50 freestyle event, with the freshman Stirling taking first in a 20.90 finish and Sorenson taking second with a time of 21.04.

Sophomore Luis Ventura placed third in the men’s 200 free, posting a 1:41.66 finish in the event.

In the men’s 200 individual medley, Taylor won his second event of the night, clocking a time of 1:52.13.

Ng finished the men’s 100 butterfly in 49.95, good enough to earn his second first-place finish of the night.

The action continues for BYU Saturday at 10 a.m. PDT as they wrap up the Pacific Invite with a dual meet against Pacific. Scores and results will be posted on the website at the conclusion of the meet.
