Cougars Finish on Top at Intermountain Shootout
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – On the final day of the Intermountain Shootout, the BYU’s swim and dive teams finished on top, defeating its opponents Saturday afternoon.
“This is one of the best meets that we have had in years,” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “I’m so happy for everyone.”
The men and women quickly showcased their talent by taking first in both the men and women’s 200-yard freestyle relays. The women’s team came away with a time of 1:35.60, while the men finished at 1:21.95.
The BYU women continued to represent their team by putting up the top-three times in two events. Brynn Sproul, Jessica LeSueur and Anna Despain dominated in the 500-yard freestyle with times of 5:03.49, 5:11.69 and 5:16.27, respectively. In the women’s 200-yard individual medley, Kati McBratney, Lily Plaudis and Charlotte Fie’eiki swam the top times of 2:04.36, 2:10.20 and 2:10.23, respectively.
Levi Jensen placed high in many events, taking first in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 25.60 and third in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:56.04. Javier Matta also came out strong in the final day, securing two wins for himself in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard butterfly with times of 1:52.27 and 49.20, respectively.
Freshmen cougars Tyler Edlefren, McBratney and Plaudis added more first-place finishes to their records, while several others earned top-five placements for BYU.
The diving team finished the competition with the women’s 1-meter event and the men’s 3-meter event. Kimble Mahler and Morgan Cooper finished first and second with scores of 278.00 and 272.40, respectively. For the women, Kennedy Cribbs earned second at 252.50.
The men’s team defeated Air Force, 215 to 177, Colorado Mesa Club, 320 to 41 and Colorado Mesa, 250 to 142.
The women’s team defeated Air Force, 273 to 119, Colorado Mesa Club, 326 to 28 and Colorado Mesa, 293 to 99.
The Cougars have two weeks off before they face Colorado Mesa in a dual meet at the Richards Building Pool on Friday, Oct. 18, at 11:30 a.m. MDT.
