Swimmers Continue to Dominate at Speedo Cup

LONG BEACH -- The 17th-ranked BYU men's swim team continued its strong showing at the annual Speedo Cup competition Friday to remain in second-place, while the women also benefited from several strong performances to remain in seventh.

After day two, the BYU men's team remains in second with a score of 610.5 while No. 6 USC leads with a score of 698.5. The Cougars lead third-place Hawaii by 72 points. The women's team has 373.5 points, but trail No. 8 USC, who leads with 684 points.

Leading the Cougars once again was senior All-American Arunas Savickas, who took the 200 freestyle event with a season-best time of 1:36.46, narrowly missing the NCAA qualifying time of 1:36.39. The 200 medley relay team of Savickas, Nick Tobler, Gary Tan and Mike Mullen won as well. Tan finished second in the 100 back with a time of 50.19 while the 800 free relay team also captured second place. Freshman Nick Tobler posted a fourth-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 57.47 while Rob Morris finished fifth in the 200 free with a season-best time of 1:40.41.

The women's team had several good finishes to help BYU remain in seventh-place. Senior Jennifer Tasker was the highest finisher for BYU, taking fifth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:04.48. The 200 medley relay team also finished fifth, while freshman Nikki Tadlock and sophomore Ashlee Rumfallow each posted eighth-place finishes in the 100 breast and the 100 back, respectively.

The Cougars conclude competition late Saturday night.
