PROVO -- Senior swimmer William Betz received national recognition this week after his performance at the Mountain West Conference Championships by being named the Division I National Swimmer of the Week.

This is the first such accolade in school history for the BYU men's swimming team.

"It was quit a surprise," said men's head coach Tim Powers. "Bill is a great swimmer and leader for our team."

Betz, a native of Logan, Utah earned first-team All-MWC honors in the 50-yard freestyle, the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relays as well as second-team nods for his performances in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay.

Besides swimming Betz boasts some of the best academic achievements in the country as well. He is a two-time Academic All-MWC, a College Swimming coaches Association of America Academic All-American, a two-time Cougar Club Scholar Athlete, and a member of the No. 2 BYU All-Academic Team in the country.

Each summer Betz organizes humanitarian medical relief by gathering thousands of dollars in medical supplies and then driving them to El Salvador. Betz and his efforts are featured in Thursday's, March 6 feature story by Deseret News BYU beat reporter Dick Harmon, about the humanitarian efforts the swimmer devotes his summers to.
