Howe Second In Decathlon After Day One

COLORADO SPRINGS -- After the first day of the decathlon at the Mountain West Conference Championships, BYU's Devin Howe is currently in second with 3,526 points. Howe trails the University of New Mexico's Mark Johnson by just 29 points going into the final day of competition, which is scheduled to begin 11 a.m. (MDT).

Howe had a strong finish, winning the final two events, to climb the rankings and close in on Johnson, who has been atop the competition since the second event of the day. Howe cleared a height of 6-7 (2.01m) to win the high jump and won the 400 in 49.96 seconds.

The Cougars have two more athletes competing in the decathlon at the MWC Championships. Noah Garfield is fifth after day one with 3,224 points and Matt Weirich is seventh with 3,126 points.

Jennifer Rockwell is the lone BYU representative in the heptathlon, and after four events she is in sixth with 2,718 points. Leslie Miller of San Diego State leads the heptathlon after the first day with 3,196 points.

The decathlon and heptathlon will conclude tomorrow, with events beginning at 11 a.m. in the decathlon and 12:30 p.m. in the heptathlon.
