Two BYU Tracksters Place at USATF Junior Nationals

PROVO -- A pair of freshman from the BYU women's track team finished in the top five, in their respective races, at the USATF Junior Nationals in Denton, Texas on Saturday. Katie Martin finished 3rd in the 3000-meter race, with a time of 10 minutes, 5.7 seconds, and Nan Evans ran a 4:38.20 to place 4th in the 1500.

Both Martin and Evans just finished running in their first track season for the Cougars this spring, after redshirting the cross country season last fall. Evans, a 1999 Utah state high school champion in the 1600 from Bountiful, Utah, scored a fourth-place finish for BYU in the 1500 at the Mountain West Conference Championships in May. Martin, a Fremont, Calif. native, placed seventh in the 3000 at the MWC meet.

Top finishers at the Junior Nationals included Amy Mortimer of Kansas State and Lauren Fleshman of Stanford, both of whom competed at the NCAA Championships two weeks ago. Fleshman and Mortimer ran 1-2 in the 1500, and then swapped places in the 3000.

The top two in each event from Junior Nationals move on to compete in the U.S.-Canada Junior Dual meet to be held July 18-19 in Montreal, Canada. Because other athletes are scheduled to compete in the U.S. Olympic trials at that time, both BYU runners have put themselves in a position to contend for a spot at the international meet in Canada.
