Hedengren Named GTE Academic All-American

PROVO, Utah (June 13) - Cougar distance runner John Hedengren was named to the GTE Academic All-American second team Tuesday. Hedengren was chosen as a member of the men's spring at-large second team after finishing the school year with a 3.95 cumulative GPA in chemical engineering.

This is the second such honor of the year for Hedengren, who was named to the GTE Academic third team for the fall-winter season after being named Mountain West Conference cross country athlete of the year. Hedengren, a junior from Richland, Wash., was the leader of the distance squad on the men's outdoor track and field team that placed 27th at nationals. His time of 29:33.44 in the 10,000 meters was the only NCAA provisional mark earned by any of the distance athletes this season.

At the MWC outdoor championships, Hedengren scored eight team points on a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters and a seventh-place showing in the 5,000 meters. The Cougar Club honored Hedengren at its spring banquet with the Kimball Memorial Award, given to the BYU athlete with the highest scholarly achievement.
