BYU's Pugsley and Walcott Score Wins at MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships
PROVO, Utah (May 18) - BYU's Curtis Pugsley scored 7,525 points, while Anna-Lee Walcott racked up 5,224 points as the pair earned 10 points each for the Cougars in the second day of competition in Provo Thursday. BYU took the top three spots in the decathlon to lead the men's team scoring with 24 points, followed by Air Force (7) and Colorado State (7). UNLV used second- and fifth-place finishes in the heptathlon to lead the women's team scoring with 12 points, followed by BYU (10), Utah (9), San Diego State (5), and New Mexico (3).
Pugsley and Walcott, both freshmen, earned NCAA provisional marks and personal bests in the competition. Pugsley moved to No. 5 in the national rankings, narrowly missing the NCAA automatic mark (7,600). BYU's Hyrum Prince (7,109) and Daniel Parkinson (6,418) finished second and third, respectively, followed by Kurt Duffy of Air Force (6,304), Colorado State's Doug Crumb (5,911) and Matt Webber (5,625), and Air Force's Tom Clark (5,591).
Prince opened the day with a win in the 110-meter hurdles (14.65) and the discus (132'-5"), and moved into second place when Crumb withdrew from the pole vault with a hamstring injury. Pugsley cleared a personal-best 16'-8.75" to win the pole vault competition, and Crumb returned to win the javelin with a toss of 178'. Duffy claimed a 4:40.89-second win in the 1,500 meters.
In women's action, Walcott moved one spot ahead of UNLV's Chantel Yates at No. 23 in the national rankings with the heptathlon victory. Yates, also a freshman, finished in second place with 5,032 points. Utah's Erianne Allen took third place (4,932), followed by Leslie Miller of San Diego State (4,721) and UNLV's Heather Steadham (4,718). Walcott began the day in second place, but used a win in the long jump (18'-10") to take the lead heading into the final two events. Allen closed the gap with a first-place finish in the javelin (130'-3") before Yates closed out the day with a win in the 800 meters (2:15.89).
Competition continues Friday with a full slate of events scheduled for a 1 p.m. (MDT) start. The championships will conclude Saturday, with events running from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
