BYU, UNLV Take Early Leads at MWC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

PROVO, Utah (May 17) - BYU's Curtis Pugsley set five personal bests and UNLV's Chantel Yates earned wins in the short races as the pair claimed early leads in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, on the opening day of the Mountain West Conference Track and Field Championships Wednesday.

Pugsley finished the day with 4,024 points, ahead of Colorado State's Doug Crumb with 3,817 and BYU's Hyrum Prince with 3,729 and Daniel Parkinson with 3,596. Pugsley claimed wins in four events on the day, placing first in the 100 meters (10.98), long jump (23'-0"), high jump (6'-10.75"), and 400 meters (49.74). Fellow Cougar Prince took the only other event of the day, the shot put, with a throw of 46'-1.5".

In women's action, Yates led the field after four events with 3,121 points, followed by BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott with 3,103, Erianne Allen of Utah (2,979) and Heather Steadham of UNLV (2,838). Yates opened the competition with a win in the 100-meter hurdles (14.26), and finished with a win in the 200 meters (24.93). Walcott set a personal best in winning the high jump (5-5.25), and Allen was the shot put champion (36'-9").

The championships continue with the second half of the heptathlon and decathlon Thursday, beginning at 12 p.m., and run through Saturday, May 20.
