Weather Offers Perfect Day for Qualifying Marks

PROVO -- Earlier in the week, forecasters were calling for mixed snow and rain on Friday. However, it was nothing short of a perfect day in Provo at the Clarence Robison Invitational. 14 different competitors recorded regional-qualifying marks, including 12 BYU athletes.

"Earlier in the week we were a little nervous as we looked at the forecast," BYU head men's coach Mark Robison said. "But today was gorgeous. It was close to perfect. The weather was great, the track was fast, and we saw a lot of great performances out here today. We're praying the weather will be equally as nice tomorrow so that we'll have another perfect day for the finals."

In the women's field events, junior Missy Wood outdistanced the field in the javelin with a qualifying mark of 46.03 meters, while Nikki Hughes, who was competing unattached, won the long jump with a mark of 6.24 meters.

Idaho State's Maureen Griffin shattered the regional qualifying mark (51.30 meters) in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 59.96 meters. BYU's Malita Bingham placed sixth and qualified for the regional meet with a throw of 51.64 meters.

In the high jump, BYU freshmen Stephanie Bodhaine and Jessica Taylor finished tied for second with an ending height of 1.63 meters. Jayni Carlton of Weber State won the event with a leap of 1.68 meters.

In the men's field events, BYU's Matt Hickman and Spencer Smith finished one, two, respectively. Hickman won the event with a regional qualifying mark of 61.42 meters, while Smith finished second with a toss of 59.29. BYU's Dan Arrhenius also won the shot put by over one meter, qualifying for the NCAA regional meet with a season-long 17.30-meters performance.

In the men's 110-meter hurdle prelims, junior Russell Elggren improved on his top time, recording a season best 14.55 to win the event. Freshman Ben Gardner finished tied for fourth with a season-best 14.80, and qualified for Saturday's finals.

In the women's hurdles, three Cougars qualified for Saturday's finals, led by Miriam Fisher, who finished fourth with a time of 14.21. Anna-Lee Walcott finished seventh in a time of 14.43, while Anita Nygard took eighth with a time of 14.65.

BYU claimed the top four spots in the 400-meters--sort of. Kish Beverley, who's eligibility expired last season, competed unattached. The former Cougar turned in a blistering 46.93, followed by junior Matt Rowe, who eclipsed the regional qualifying mark with a 47.43. Matt Nielsen finished third (47.75), followed by sophomore David Chesser (47.49). Jeremy Stowell, who finished ninth with a time of 49.27, also qualified for Saturday's final.

Freshman Mary Bennion qualified for tomorrow's final in the women's 400-meters with a fifth-place finish (56.90), while sophomore Jennifer Rockwell qualified for the finals with a time of 11.85 in the women's 100-meters, and eclipsed the regional qualifying mark int eh 400-meter hurdles with a winning time of 1:00.87.

In the men's 100-meter prelims, sophomore Cody Fonnesbeck turned in a regional qualifying mark of 10.47--his fastest time of the season--to take second behind former NCAA National Champion, and Olympic sprinter, Leonard Myles-Mills (10.37). Teammate Nate Soleberg also eclipsed the regional qualifying mark with a 10.57 to finish in fourth. Both Soleberg and Fonnesbeck player for the BYU football team. Freshman Paul Smith finished sixth with a qualifying time of 10.70, an improvement of .24 on his season best.

In an attempt to qualify in a second event, Kassi Andersen, who has already qualified in the steeplechase with the world's fastest time this year, also qualified in the 800-meters with a winning time of 2:08.20 to advance to Saturday's final. Teammate Julia Ostler-Rocque finished second, yet advanced to tomorrow's final with a time of 2:19.06. Freshman Aneta Lemiesz also advanced to the finals, finishing fourth with a time of 2:08.95.

Five Cougars advanced to Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles, led by senior Greg Flint, who finished second with a qualifying mark of 51.43. Freshman Ben Gardner also qualified with a 52.29 for a third-place finish. Junior Russell Elggren finished fourth with a time of 52.55, followed by Kansas Whitear in fifth with a time of 52.92. Senior Daymon Visser registered a 55.77 to finished ninth and capture the final qualifying spot.

In the men's 200-meters, the Cougars, past and present, swept the field with a first through fifth-place finish. Beverly and Myles-Mills finished first and second, while Smith (21.34), Fonnesbeck (21.36)and Nielsen (21.27) rounded out the top five.

Freshman Mary Bennion will compete on Saturday after a ninth-place finish (25.02) in the women's 200-meters.

The final day of competition at the Clarence Robison Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. (MDT) at the BYU Track & Field Complex. Admission is free to the public.
