Fourth-Ranked Cougars Set to Begin 2001 Season
PROVO -- The fourth-ranked BYU men's volleyball team will kick off the 2001 season with an exhibition match at UVSC on Friday, Jan. 12. The match will be played in the Physical Education Activites Center, beginning at 7 p.m. (MST). General admission is $3 and students with an identification card will be admitted for just $1.
"For a long time, UVSC has had a premier club volleyball team," BYU head coach Carl McGown said. "Not to long ago they were playing for the national championship. They have already played some this year and are probably a little ahead of us, in terms of competition, at this point. This will be a good match for us. We'll have to play hard in order to win."
The Cougars will also be in action Saturday, participating in the annual Blue/White Match. The intrasquad scrimmage is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse. Admission is free.
"We have a very deep team," McGown said. "We think BYU vs. BYU will be as good a match as some of the opponents we will face this season. It will be a quality volleyball match and a great chance for the fans to watch some excellent volleyball. Because the boys don't want to lose to each other, you'll probably see a little trash talking."
The Cougars kick off the regular season on Friday, Jan. 19 and 20, playing host to LaVerne in the Smith Fieldhouse. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. (MST).
