Amicone Steps Down as BYU Softball Coach

PROVO -- Mary Kay Amicone today announced she is stepping down as BYU head softball coach, effective immediately. Amicone, who guided the program since its inception in 1999, indicated her decision was based on differences in coaching philosophy between her and the administration.

"I am proud of the softball program we have built at BYU. In the three seasons since we started this program, we have won a Mountain West Conference regular season championship and tournament title, and have participated in the NCAA Tournament," said Amicone. "I have enjoyed working with the student-athletes on my team and wish them the best. Regretfully, the philosophical differences between the administration and me are too great for me to continue coaching at BYU."

Amicone earned an 81-76 record in three seasons at the Cougar helm.

"Coach Amicone has worked hard to establish BYU's softball program," Elaine Michaelis, BYU director of women's intercollegiate athletics, said. "However, there are issues regarding her leadership style that we have been unable to resolve for some time. We appreciate the work she has done and wish her the best."
