Seniors to Play in Final Home Games
PROVO -- The BYU women's softball team (28-12, 6-5) prepares for its final home games of the season this weekend against Colorado State (25-10, 6-4) at 5 p.m. on Friday and New Mexico (19-30-1, 2-8) at noon on Saturday. KBYU will broadcast the first game against Colorado State and live stats will be available for all games.
RECAP
BYU is returning from a seven-game Mountain West Conference road trip that saw the Cougars go 3-4. The Cougars split at New Mexico and Colorado State two weeks ago. BYU lost at San Diego State last Thursday 5-2 and played only a single game due to rain delays. The Cougars then lost 3-2 at UNLV before rebounding to win 14-0 in five innings led by senior Mandy Flint's complete game one-hitter shutout.
OLI KEOHOHOU
All-American Oli Keohohou's was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks on Tuesday. The junior outfield hit her 18th home run of the season in the blowout win at UNLV, Saturday. Keohohou is second in the nation in home runs and home runs per game at 0.45. She is 12th in batting average with .451 and 15th in RBI per game at 1.03 with 41 RBI in 40 games.
COLORADO STATE
The Rams (25-10, 6-4) are 1/2 game up on the Cougars for second place in the Mountain West Conference. The Rams finished the conference season in last place last season. Last season, the two teams played an epic game at Gail Miller Field that went to 16 innings before the Rams pulled out a 6-5 win. The Rams lead the all-time series 8-6 with the 1-3, 4-3 split in Fort Collins earlier this season.
The Cougars managed only three runs in both games against the Rams despite being ranked ninth in the nation in scoring with their 5.70 average. Megan Masser and JayCee Wood lead the Rams pitching attack with. Masser has a 13-4 record with a 1.35 ERA and 104 strikeouts. Wood has a 1.21 ERA and a perfect 3-0 record.
Steph Roberts leades the hitting attack with a .350 batting average and 11 doubles. Ricki Walker, named to the MWC All-Tournament Team in Provo last season, is hitting .342 with a team-high 23 RBI.
NEW MEXICO
The Lobos took the first game on April 10th in Albuquerque 4-2 before the Cougars rebounded to win the second game 5-2. The Lobos lead the all-time series 9-7 and defeated the Cougars in all three games last season including the opening game of the MWC Tournament.
Freshman Ashley VanBoxmeer leads the Lobo attack with a .358 batting average and team high 13 doubles and 30 RBI. Kelly Glass is hitting .333 with a team-high 55 runs scored. Amy Dumas leads the team in virtually every pitching category in wins (11), ERA (1.95) and strikeouts (153). She pitched both games against the Cougars on April 10th.
THE COUGARS
BYU is still off to its best start in school history with a 28-12 record. The Cougars rolled into conference play with an 11 game winning streak, but have only managed a 6-5 record in conference play.
Sophmore Lauren Watson is having a breakout season batting .373 and has 47 hits and six home runs. Senior Brooke Cadiente is second on the team in home runs with eight and RBI with 33. She needs only two more home runs to reach double-digits for the third consecutive season.
Senior Mandy Flint leads the Cougars on the mound with a 1.57 ERA and 7-2 record. Freshman Brooke Boyce leads the team in strikeouts with 49 and is followed by senior Cynthia Fallowfield with 47. Sophomore Niki Andersen leads the team in starts with 13.
BYU finished the season next week playing at Southern Utah on April 30 and at Utah on May 3. The MWC Tournament will be in San Diego from May 8-11.
