BYU plays TCU and Cal Baptist in Thanksgiving Classic hosted by San Diego State

PROVO, Utah BYU (3-1) spends the Thanksgiving holiday in San Diego competing in the San Diego State Thanksgiving Classic. The Cougars play TCU (3-0) Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:15 p.m. PST and Cal Baptist (1-3) Saturday, Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. PST.

ABOUT BYU

  • The Cougars are 3-1 on the year after a come-from-behind 62-57 overtime win at Utah State Tuesday.
  • BYU is shooting 40.6 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from the 3-point line and 72.1 percent when shooting from the free throw line.
  • The Cougars have three players putting up double-digit points in games with a team-best 16.3 points from freshman Shaylee Gonzales. Junior Brenna Chase follows with 14.0 points and sophomore Paisley Johnson contributes 13.0 points a contest.
  • Johnson leads the way in rebounding with a 7.3 average; in assists, Chase tops the stat sheet dishing out 6.3 assists per game; Gonzales and Chase get 2.5 steals per contest.
  • BYU was selected to finish third in the 2018-19 West Coast Conference race, while Chase and Sara Hamson were named to the Preseason ALL-WCC Team.
  • The team boasts a young squad with 11 underclassmen and just two returning starters.

 

ABOUT TCU

  • TCU enters the Thanksgiving Classic with a 3-0 record, picking up wins over Duquesne, Mississippi Valley State and SMU.
  • The Horned Frogs return all five starters from last year’s team that went 23-13 and advanced to the WNIT Semifinals.
  • TCU was selected fourth in the Big-12 preseason poll. Senior Amy Okonkwo made the Preseason All-Big 12 Team.
  •  The Horned Frogs average 74. 0 points and 41.0 rebounds a game.

 

ABOUT CBU

  • California Baptist returns five letterwinners including three starters from a squad that compiled a 17-12 record.
  • CBU was picked to finish eighth in the WAC.
  • The Lancers have compiled a 1-3 record with a win over Long Beach State.
  • CBU is currently scoring 73.8 points per contest and pulling down 42.5 rebounds.

The Cougar women continue their nonconference portion of the 2018-19 campaign on the road. They are at Southern Utah on Tuesday, Nov. 27 and at Utah Valley on Thursday, Nov. 29.
