Cougars open conference play against San Francisco

PROVO, Utah — BYU women’s basketball opens West Coast Conference play against San Francisco in the Marriott Center on Monday, Dec. 28. This will be the 27th all-time meeting between the Cougars and Dons, with BYU holding a 20-6 series lead.

The game will be broadcast live on BYUtv and on the BYUtv App at 2 p.m. MST.

ABOUT BYU

• The Cougars finished their non-conference portion of the schedule with a 4-1 record with wins over LSU, Utah State, Montana State and Southern Utah. The one loss came against Washington
• Sophomore guard Shaylee Gonzales is BYU’s scoring leader with a 21.2 ppg average. Sophomore forward Lauren Gustin (13.4) and senior guard Paisley Harding Johnson (12.4) are also averaging double figures in points
• Gonzales is currently the 29th highest scorer in the nation (21.2 ppg)
• Gustin ranks 8th in the nation in rebounds per game (11.8) and 23rd in double-doubles (3)
• In assists, senior guard Maria Albiero leads the team with a 3.8 apg average while also scoring 6.4 ppg
• With 331 career blocks, Sara Hamson is just 10 away from passing her older sister, Jennifer, as No. 2 on BYU’s all-time career blocks list. The two’s mother, Tresa, is the all-time leader with 494 career blocks
• As a team, the Cougars rank 6th in the country in free-throw percentage (.825) and 24th in three-point percentage (.386)

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO

• The Dons are off to a 4-2 start on the year with wins over Cal, Fresno State, William Jessup and Sacramento State. Their two losses were to Oregon State and UC Davis
• Redshirt freshman guard Ioanna Krimili leads USF in scoring (20.5 ppg) while also averaging 3.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. Krimili was named the WCC player of the week for Dec. 14
• Junior forward Leilah Vigil leads the team in rebounds (7.7 rpg) while sophomore forward Lucija Kostic is the Dons’ assist leader (4 apg)
• USF finished 9th in the WCC standings last season after going 5-13 in conference play. The Dons were picked to finish 10th in this year’s WCC pre-season poll
• Head coach Molly Goodenbour has a 45-54 record in her four seasons at USF thus far
