Three Cougars In Double Digit Scoring Help Team Beat SUU

Provo, UT - (Dec. 29, 2001) All-American Erin Thorn was one of three Cougar women scoring in double digits as BYU's women's basketball team cruised to a 78-68 victory over SUU, Saturday.

The Cougar women, who improved to 9-3 on the season, have a five-game winning streak and are 3-0 in the Marriott Center. SUU falls to 4-8 on the year.

Thorn led the BYU team with 19 points followed by a season high 18 points for Stacy Jensen and 11 for junior forward Jennifer Leitner.

Both teams played fairly even until Brittany Larson's three-pointer at the eight minute mark of the first half sparked the Cougar team who had an eight-point 20-12 lead. BYU would go on to score 14 points in the next four minutes to take an 34-20 advantage with 3:55 left in the first half of play. The Cougars went into the locker room with a 13-point 42-29 lead.

"We had more energy early in the game, but we ran out of energy both physically and mentally down the stretch," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "I thought Heather Cheesman and Brittany Larson came in and gave us a good lift," commented the coach.

Senior guard Stacy Jensen scored the first points for the Cougar team three minutes into the second half after SUU cut the 13-point BYU lead to nine. With 11 minutes left in the contest, the Cougars were enjoying a comfortable 17-point 58-41 advantage when SUU's Megan Woolston and Lindsey Hille helped their team battle back, cutting the lead to nine 68-59 with 2:44 left in the game. The Cougars held off the smart play by the Thunderbirds to win the game by 10 points.

SUU's Caroline Heaton led all scores with her double-double performance of 25 points and 11 rebounds. Woolston finished the night with 13 points followed by Sally Johnson's 10. The Thunderbirds shot 38 percent from the field and 66 percent from the free throw line and tallied 16 offensive boards to the Cougars 13.

BYU shot 47 percent from the field and finished the night with 8 of 17 from behind the arc. The Cougars edged the Thunderbirds in the rebound category by one 41 to 40, 28 of those were defensive boards.

The Cougar women's team plays one more home game prior to the opening of MWC action. They host the University of Arkansas on Jan. 2, a team that's making its first trip to Provo and the Marriott Center. Tip off is set for 4 p.m.
