Thorn Selected To Play In WBCA All-Star Challenge
PROVO, UT (Mar. 27, 2003) Senior All-American Erin Thorn was selected as one of twenty top senior collegiate players to participate in the 2003 WBCA All-Star Challenge in Atlanta, Georgia during the NCAA Division I Final Four, on April 3.
Thorn, a 5-10 guard from Orem, Utah was the lone MWC player selected to the prestigious showcase. The WBCA All-Star Challenge features 17 of the top women's college senior from NCAA Division I, II, and III as well as NAIA players and are voted on by head coaches.
Leading the college all-stars at point guard will be the Cougars Erin Thorn as well as point guard Ashley McElhiney from Vanderbilt, North Carolina's Coretta Brown, Iowa State's Lindsey Wilson, and Boston College's Brianne Stepherson. The roster also includes six perimeter players and five inside/post players. If any of the players' named are participating with their team in the Final Four, alternates will be chosen.
Thorn finished her stellar BYU career earning three All-American citations, three MWC All-Conference First Team honors, four consecutive MWC All-Tournament Honors, including an MVP accolade for the 2002 championship title. At the conclusion of this year's MWC tournament, Thorn set a new league tournament record with 76 points to become the all-time leader in tournament scoring with 199 points. And she's the only player in the league tournament history to record 30-points in back-to-back games.
The senior All-American also leaves her mark in BYU's women's basketball history by becoming the school's all-time three-point leader both in points per game (9) and in three-pointers made in a career. The single-game record of nine treys is for the Cougars' men's and women's team. She also becomes the school's fourth leading scorer and joins the 2,000-point club with 2, 061 points.
The WBCA All-Star Doubleheader on April 3, begins with the WBCA High School All-America game followed by the All-Star Challenge. All games will be played at the Georgia Tech Alexander Memorial Coliseum; tip off is ET for 6 P.m., ET.
