PROVO -- The BYU women's basketball team beat Westminster College 53-44 Tuesday in the team's first exhibition game of the season.

Fifteen Cougars saw action in the game, and they shot 40.4 percent from the field. Junior center Cassie King led BYU scorers with nine points. Westminster's Shannon Evans led all scorers with 16 points.

"This is a time to get kids experience, and a couple of times we looked good out there," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "It was definitely a first game for us, and it's really only our second time scrimmaging all year. I was pretty happy with our defense, though. That's what we've worked the hardest on."

BYU struck first and jumped out to a 4-0 lead on shots from juniors King and Shawnee Slade. Westminster was able to hold the Cougars scoreless for the next four minute, though, and tied the game at 4-4 on a triple from Griffin freshman Dani Evans.

Sophomore guard Jaime Judkins highlighted a Cougar surge to a seven-point lead with two consecutive three-pointers. Despite the run, the Griffins were able to tie the game at 20-20 with 43 seconds left in the half. A King layup seconds later gave BYU a two-point lead at the end of the first half.

Westminster took its first lead of the game, 25-24, three minutes into the second half on a triple from junior forward Alexis Tucker. The Cougars answered with an eight-point run to take another seven-point lead.

The Cougars extended their largest lead of the game to twelve points, but the Griffins were able to pull back to within five in the last minute of the game. Despite Westminster's best efforts, BYU was able to extend its lead back to nine and end the game at 53-44.

BYU's next exhibition game will be Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Marriott Center against Eastern Oregon. Admission to the game will be free.
