Four Double-Digit Scorers Lead to Win
PROVO -- The BYU women's basketball team improved to 5-6 on Saturday night with a 68-58 win over UCLA who dropped to 4-5 on the year.
For the sixth time this season senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling led the Cougars in scoring as she finished the game with 16. She also led BYU for the first time in rebounds as she pulled down 9 boards.
"We did some things tonight well that we have struggled with the whole season," BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. "When it was 42-40 with about 12 minutes I told the girls they needed to step up offensively and defensively. They did, and it was a great overall team win."
Junior Cassie King had an impressive performance coming off the bench for the Cougars as she ended the game with a season-high 13 points and 5 rebounds in 27 minutes of play.
BYU also had a strong game from freshman Mindy Nielson who started for the first time this season as she finished with 15 points and a team-high seven assists, both career highs.
The Cougars attempted a season-high 27 three-pointers against the Bruins as they connected on nine of them. BYU also won the battle of the boards by six rebounds, improving its record to 5-2 when they out rebound their opponents.
After the Bruins got on the scoreboard first, BYU got its first lead of the game at the 18:11 mark of the first half as they found themselves ahead 8-6 and keep on top of UCLA for the rest of the game.
Gillespie-Carling helped the Cougars get out to a quick start at the beginning of the game as she scored the teams first five points. BYU was led in scoring in the first half by Nielson who finished the half with nine points.
Late in the first half both teams were not able to find the bottom of the net as there was a three and a half minutes scoreless stretch that was eventually broke at the 1:58 left in the half. The Bruins were led in the first half by their freshman Nina Earl who came off the bench to contribute eight points in her team's effort.
In the second half, with 6:51 left BYU saw its largest lead of the game as they were up by 17, 59-42. This came off an impressive defensive effort by the Cougars as they held UCLA scoreless from the 10:50 mark until 5:45 left in the game.
The Cougars stretched out their second half lead as they shot an impressive 52 percent from the field, while the Bruins were held to just 33 percent shooting on the night.
"Cassie King had a great game for us tonight," Judkins said. "She came in and really gave us the lift that we needed against the big frontline of UCLA. We also saw a great game from Mindy Nielson who started for the first time for us. Mindy will be a very good player for us in the future."
The BYU women's basketball team will next be in action on Dec. 29 as they travel to play Utah State University at 5 p.m.
