Cougars upset No. 15 Cowgirls
PROVO -- With a 20-point performance by senior Mallary Gillespie-Carling, the BYU women's basketball team upset No. 15 Wyoming, 56-42, Saturday night in the Marriott Center.
Saturday's game marked Gillespie-Carling's 61st double-digit outing of her career and 14th this season. She has also scored at least 20 points in more than five games this year alone.
Freshman Mindy Nielson followed Carling, grabbing 13 points and five assists in the contest. Junior Cassie King also contributed to the Cougar victory. Her 10 points marks her third double-digit game of the season. King's five field goals is a career high and her perfect 5-5 shooting is a career best.
"It was a great win tonight and I am very happy with it," said BYU head coach Jeff Judkins. "It was really a team effort. We tried some new things tonight, but they adjusted well and stepped up."
Through the first part of the first half, both teams fought to take control of the game. Wyoming got on the board first and stayed ahead of BYU. The Cougars kept it close and with 11:50 on the clock King tied the game at 10-10. Wyoming soon took the lead again with a free throw shot, but that did not discourage Carling as she went on to drop a three-point basket and followed it with a reverse lay-in. There were five lead changes and one in the first 9:43 of the game when BYU took the lead.
The Cougars created the largest scoring margin of the first half at 17-11, with 8:36 remaining. Wyoming quickly closed the gap and came within one point of BYU. But Nielson responded sinking the next five points. The Cougars claimed the lead by two as the first half ended, 24-22.
Out of the locker room, both teams remained scoreless for the first four minutes until Nielson ended the drought at 15:52, taking a 26-22 BYU lead. The Cowgirls shot back and tied it up 26-26. Junior Shawnee Slade responded with a three-point basket, but Wyoming answered with a three-pointer of its own, tying 29-29.
BYU took the lead yet again and this time never looked back. The Cougars went on a 12-point run, which was capped at 3:09 with a three-point basket by Carling, 47-32. With a fast-break basket by freshman Keilani Moeaki, BYU claimed a 20-point lead with one minute left on the clock, the largest lead of the game.
"This is the best well-rounded game we have played all year, both defensively and offensively," Judkins said. "The girls really came out focused tonight and realized what they can do as a team."
The Cougars continue MWC play on Tuesday as they travel to Ft. Worth, Texas, to face TCU. The game starts at 6 p.m. MT., and airs live on the Mtn.
