FORT WORTH -- In a battle for sole possession of third place in the Mountain West Conference, BYU fell to fourth place with a record of 11-9 on the season and 5-3 in conference play in a 73-54 loss at TCU (13-9, 6-2) Tuesday.

Senior guard Mallary Gillespie-Carling scored in double figures for the 15th time this season and the 62nd time in her career with 11 points. Freshman guard Mindy Nielson earned her sixth double-digit performance with 14 points. As a team, BYU shot 48.1 percent from the floor and brought down 29 boards in comparison to TCU's 41.3 percent shooting and 37 rebounds.

"We got out-hustled; we didn't have our defensive intensity that we've had in the past," BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said. "We have to want it more. We have to realize that we're a good team when we play hard."

The Cougars incurred an early deficit and struggled to make up the distance. BYU shot 50 percent from the field in the first 10 minutes of the game, but only had 10 points to combat its eight turnovers in those 10 minutes. TCU had a 10-point lead with a 39 percent mark from the field and five offensive rebounds.

The Lady Frog lead jumped to 16 at one point in the first half, but the Cougars were able to make the necessary adjustments to reduce the deficit back to single digits. BYU was able to make Carling central to those adjustments, and it was her three pointer to cap a 9-0 run that pulled her team to with seven points, 24-31, with 4:21 left in the period.

At the half, TCU was up 38-29. BYU shot 53.8 percent on 14-26 shooting and, unusually, no three-point attempts. The Lady Frogs were 14-34 from the floor for 41.2 percent and 4-12 from behind the arc.

BYU was not able to carry that momentum into the second half. Ten minutes into the second half the Cougars had only scored four points on 2-12 shooting from the field. TCU on the other hand had increased its lead to 15 at 48-33.

The Cougar offense picked up in the final ten minutes, but so did the Lady Frogs'. TCU matched nearly every shot BYU made in the closing minutes and finished the game with a 19-point lead, 73-54.

Judkins' team will have a week off before beginning the second half of conference play Feb. 13 at home in the Marriott Center against last-place Colorado State.
