Women Stay Alive in WNIT, Play at ASU Tuesday
Following a 62-58 victory over Pepperdine, the BYU women’s basketball team (21-9) continues a run in the 2010 WNIT with a second round game against ASU (18-13).
The Cougars and Sun Devils will meet on Tues. Mar. 23 at 6:30 p.m., in Tempe at Wells Fargo Arena on the ASU campus.
BYU was one of 31 teams to receive an Automatic Berth. Three other schools from the MWC (WY, UNM and Utah) received At-large Berths in to the 64-team field.
ASU finished fifth in the Pac-10 with a 9-9 record falling to Cal in the quarterfinals of their league’s championship.

This is BYU’s 12th overall appearance in postseason play and its fifth in the WNIT where they’ve compiled a 4-4 record including Thursday’s 62-58 win over Pepperdine.
Team Has Strong Showing In The MWC 2009-10 Race
With an 11-5 record, the Cougar women clinched a second place finish in league play. BYU was picked to finish sixth in the MWC.

The Cougars received votes in the AP poll twice this year. The week of Jan. 18 they received three nods while the week of Mar. 8 they received two votes.
COUGARS IN THE WNIT - 2010
This will be the fifth time that the BYU women’s basketball team has been selected to compete in the expanded 64-team single elimination WNIT. In the postseason tournament, the Cougars have compiled a 3-4 record in four appearances. The last time BYU was in the WNIT was during the 2004-05 campaign where they fell to Gonzaga 57-71 in the first round.
BYU also competed in the Preseason WNIT during the 2006-07 campaign where they advanced to the Final Four after a 73-50 home victory over Idaho State, an upset 55-52 victory over then No. 5 ranked Stanford on their home court before falling to the Baylor Bears 58-84.
ABOUT THE POSTSEASON WNIT
The Women’s National Invitation Tournament consists of 64 Division I women’s basketball teams who compete at participating schools including the semifinals and the championships. Every round is single elimination.
The Postseason WNIT features 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and the championship.
2010 WNIT Second Round Opponent
ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY - The Sun Devils have an 18-13 overall record heading into the second round of the 2010 WNIT. They advanced by getting a home win over New Mexico State 84-81 on 3/17/10. In the Pac-10 they finished fifth with a 9-9 record and lost in the quarterfinals of their league’s tournament to California 50-60. The team’s leading scorer is senior guard Danielle Orsillo who tallies 14.2 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. 6-5 junior forward Becca Tobin tops the rebounding category for ASU grabbing 6.3 boards per game while scoring 98.8 points. Tenaya Watson dishes out the most assists on the team with a total of 72 while Orsillo leads the way in steals with 54 to date. When playing at Wells Fargo Arena, ASU has compiled an 11-4 record. Head coach Charlie Turner Thorne is in her 14th season with the Sun Devils.

Last Meeting
It’s been 19 years since the Cougars and Sun Devils played each other. Their last meeting was on Dec.. 7, 1991 when BYU was competing in the Arizona State Classic in Tempe. In that contest, ASU picked up the 86-75 win. The Cougars last won in Tempe on Feb. 24, 1979, an 107-56 victory. When playing in Tempe, BYU has compiled a 4-2 record.
Judkins vs. Pac-10 Schools
Since taking over the helm of the BYU women’s basketball team in the 2001, head coach Jeff Judkins has compiled a 9-6 record against Pac-10 foes. This year the Cougars are 0-1 against the Pac-10 losing to Washington in Seattle by one, 66-67 on Nov. 18, 2009.

What’s Next -
The winner of the second round WNIT game between ASU and BYU advances to the third round. They will play the winner of Tuesday’s contest between Texas Tech and Wyoming which is also scheduled to be played on Tues. Mar. 23 in Laramie. The third round of the 2010 WNIT is listed to be played Mar. 24-26 at campus sites.
