Two League Games on Tap This Week

With a (12-7, 4-1) record and in second place in the latest MWC standings, the Cougar women’s basketball team competes in two conference games this week.

They travel to San Diego to take on the Aztecs (8-9, 2-3), Wed. Jan. 26 before hosting New Mexico (6-11, 0-5) on Sat. Jan. 29. The Lobos and Cougars game tips off at 1 p.m.

ABOUT BYU

--The Cougars are led in scoring by senior guard Mindy Bonham who averages 11.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Senior forward Coriann Fraughton follows averaging 10.1 points and a team high 6.9 rebounds per contest.

--Senior guard Haley Hall tops the assists category with a total of 93 while Bonham has the most steals on the team with 40.

--Jazmine Foreman has the team’s best free throw percentage at .824, 28-34 while freshman center Jennifer Hamson is tops in the field goal percentage category at .632, 43-68.

-- The BYU bench has outscored its opponents 449 to 298 as of 1/23/11. The most points scored by the Cougar bench to date are 44 in the win over BYU-Hawaii on 12/3/10. The most bench points from an opponent on the year are 31 recorded by BYU-Hawaii.

-- BYU’s reserves are outrebounding their opponents 303 to 214 as of 1/23/11. The most rebounds by the Cougar bench are 28 vs. Utah State on 11/23/10. The most boards by the opponent bench are Utah State with 24.

RECORD WATCHING

-- BYU head coach Jeff Judkins has compiled an 192-106 record as of Jan. 23 and is eight wins away from picking up his 200th career victory.

-- Mindy Bonham has tallying a total of 1,104 points as of 1/23/11, which puts her in 18th place out of 20 on BYU’s 1,000-Points Club. She needs 19 points to tie for 17th place with Behka Stafford’s 1,123 total points.

-- Bonham has dished out a grand total of 389 career assists as of 1/23/11, which puts her in sixth place all time. She needs 43 assists away from tying for fifth place with current assistant coach Stacy Jensen’s 432.

-- Jazmine Foreman dished out two assists in the home win over CSU on 1/22/10, which gives her a career total of 358. She needs 20 to tie for eighth place with Cindy Battistone’s career total of 378.

-- In BYU’s number of games played category, Bonham and Foreman have played in a total of 110 games as of 1/23/11, which places the two tied for 17th place all time. They need to play in three more games to tie for 16th place with Cassie King’s 113 career contests played.

NEW MEXICO GAME PROMOTIONS

It's FAMILY DAY. Bring the whole family to the Marriott Center ticket office to receive free admission. Giveaways include a gift certificates to local restaurants at every time out. Contests will be geared towards families competing against each other. The game tips off at 1 P.M.

SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY

San Diego State is in fifth place in the latest MWC standings with a 8-9, 2-3 record. In league play they’ve captured wins over UNLV and New Mexico. For the Aztecs there are two players scoring in double figures with Paris Johnson’s team highs in points with a 15.2 average and an 8.3 average in rebounds. She’s followed by Courtney Clements who contributes 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds a game. Coco Davis leads the way in both assists and in steals with 109 and 26 respectively. Head coach Beth Burns is in her sixth season with the women’s basketball program guiding the team to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament last year.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO

The New Mexico Lobos are in ninth (6-11, 9-0) place heading into this week’s MWC schedule. They are at league leading TCU on Wed. Jan. 26 before making the trip to Provo for Saturday’s game. Junior guard/forward combo Lauren Taylor is leading the way in scoring for UNM averaging 9.6 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Jasmine Patterson is next contributing 9.0 points and 2.5 boards a contest. Senior guard/forward combo Amanda Best tops the list in the rebound category grabbing 6.8 boards per game, and has the most assists with a total of 50. Porche Torrance has the most steals on the team with 35 to date. Head coach Don Flanagan is in his 16th season with the Lobos women’s basketball program.
