Women Annouce 2002-03 Recruits
The BYU women's swimming and diving teams has announced recruits who have signed Letters-of-Intent to swim for the Cougars next season. These swimmers were considered both for their athletic and adademic accomplishments.
Shannon Bloom, Hesperia, Calif.
Who's Who Among American High School Students, Honor Roll student, Golden State Exam Recognition in Math. Captain, MVP, and multi-event record holder for Sultana High. Consideration High School All-American. Specializes in Middle Distance Freestyle and Butterfly events. For two years, Shannon has "adopted" a first grader and served as a pen pal, role model, and reading partner through the Book Buddies program.
Becky Pedersen, Vacaville, Calif.
Honor roll student. Middle Distance and Long Distance Freestyle events. High School All-American consideration. Junior National qualifier. Pedersen is also the starting center on her high school basketball team and made the All-American Bill Cartwright tournament team.
Natasha Schlup, Newcastle, Wyo.
National Honor Society student. Three time All-Conference, All-State, Junior National competitor, and Consideration All-American in Backstroke and Individual Medley events. Schlup was named Wyoming Aquatic Athlete of the Year, and twice name Athlete of the Meet for the State Swim Championships. Natasha also participates for the Yearbook Staff at Newcastle High, spearheads clean-up programs in Newcastle and donates time to the Senior Citizen Center in Newcastle.
Julie Nelson, Castro Valley, Calif.
National Honor Society member. Castro Valley High School Scholar Athlete and Swimming MVP. High School All-American. Swims the Butterfly, IM, and Distance events. Home swim club is Pleasanton Sea Hawks.
Aubrey Merrell, Normandy Park, Wash.
Four-year Honor Role student. U.S. Student Ambassador to Belarus and Russia 1999-2000. Two-year International Baccalaureate student. Student Body Vice President 2001-2002. Consideration High School All-American. Western Zone Champion in Butterfly event.
Aubrey Low, Dublin, Ohio
Will compete for BYU in 1-meter, 3-meter, and platform diving events. Ohio State Gymnastics champion. Finalist in Junior Nationals in Gymnastics. Aubrey has maintained a 4.0 GPA.
