Seven Cougars Earn Academic All-MWC Honors
COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Mountain West Conference announced the 2002 fall Academic All-Conference team for women's volleyball today. Seven BYU players earned the academic honor, including three, Uila Crabbe, Allison Larson and Karina Puikkonen, who were repeat selections from the 2001 team. Other Cougars named to the team were Michelle Mahaffey, Lindsey Metcalf, Laura Nielsen and Kimberly Wilson.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and be a starter or significant contributor to the team.
An MWC record 42 volleyball student-athletes earned MWC academic honors last fall, including 22 repeat selections from the 2001 squad. A league-high 10 UNLV volleyball student-athletes qualified for conference academic honors, followed by Utah with eight. BYU had seven honorees, followed by San Diego State and Wyoming with five each, New Mexico with four and Air Force with three.
San Diego State senior Nicole Akporiaye is the lone four-year member of the Academic All-MWC squad.
Wyoming's Amy Doman and Utah's Kim Turner extended their list of academic accolades by earning a spot on the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District Teams. Doman was a second-team selection in District 7, while Turner was third-team in District 8.
