As a three-sport athlete, Gary Shiede led the BYU football team to its first bowl appearance in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State.

Sheide pushed himself to excel in every sport, activity or occupation he chose. From leading his high school in basketball, baseball and football, to teaching, coaching, leading a family and leading a business, Sheide has given 100 percent to every task.

As a high school athlete, Sheide averaged 22 points per game in basketball, hit .436 as a shortstop on the baseball team and had a 60 percent completion rate in football, leading his basketball and football teams to state championships. After high school, Sheide went to Diablo Junior College in California, hoping to focus his energy on playing baseball. But when a string of injuries left Diablo’s quarterback position vacant, Sheide stepped up to launch his football career.

Following his time at Diablo, Sheide joined the BYU football team under head coach LaVell Edwards. In his junior season, he became the second-best passer in college football in 1973 and 1974 with 17.7 and 16.5 completions per game, respectively. In total offense, Sheide ranked third with 234.3 yards per game.

As a senior, he garnered accolades for leading the Cougars to a 7-4-1 season. His honors include the Sammy Baugh Trophy, Most Valuable Player in the WAC, All-WAC First Team, WAC Offensive Player of the Year and player of the week honors from the WAC, UPI and Associated Press. Sheide also led the NCAA with 388 yards passing and led the Cougars to their first bowl appearance.

Sheide graduated from BYU with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1975.

Following his football career, Sheide married “the prettiest girl on this earth,” Sherree, who loves bird watching, reading and sports. They have five children—Michelle, Tara, Troy, Marshall and Tanner—and eight grandchildren.

Sheide spent time with his family and taught physical education at Mountain Ridge Junior High School, coached football at Lone Peak High School as the assistant offensive coordinator, worked as president of Marina Ventures Global and covered baseball, softball and football as a color analyst for BYUtv. Over the years, Sheide also helped build more than 400 marinas on four continents, helped coach Lone Peak to five region championships, served in many church callings and served as a supervisor during the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City.
