1980 BYU Hall of Fame
Max “Greasy” Warner came to BYU in 1931, and played for his first two years without a single substitution. In his third year he played for all but five minutes of the season. His teammates nicknamed him Greasy because he seemed to spend a lot of playing time in opponents’ backfields after slipping through lines.
During his senior year at BYU he was elected team captain. He was named to the All-Conference team in 1933 and 1934, and became the first BYU football All-American during his senior year. He was also the first BYU football to join a professional team, playing one year with the St. Louis Gunners.
Max then began his coaching career, coaching at Park City High School until 1942 and then serving as head football coach and assistant basketball coach at Provo High. His Provo High football teams played in the state championship game in 1944 and made it to the semifinals in 1946.
He retired from coaching in 1954 to become Dean of Boys and Assistant Principal, and retired from his administrative position in 1977. Following his retirement, he received a special service award for devoting 40 years to service in education. He died in February 1980.
Max married Florence Judd in June 1937, and they had four daughters.
