Santa Barbara, Calif. (Feb. 4, 2002)--Three RBI by the UC-Santa Barbara No. 9 hitter Monday afternoon helped deliver a 12-5 loss to the BYU baseball team.

The Cougars put points on the board early in the game, but a four-for -four performance by Gauchos' second baseman Chris Malec proved too much for the struggling Cougars who drop to 1-6 on the season.

For the fourth time this season, Doug Jackson led off the first inning with a hit. Jackson advanced to second base on an error, and hot-hitting Matt Carson singled to right field knocking Jackson home for the first run of the game.

UCSB, now 2-3, answered the Cougars' fast start with a three-run first inning of its own. Matt Wilkerson's two-out triple with two runners aboard initiated the Gaucho's offensive attack. Malec singled to right scoring Wilkerson to give UC-Santa Barbara a 3-1 lead it would never surrender.

Clayton Carson led off the third with a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jackson. Cameron Coughlan's single scored Carson to make the score 3-2, but Coughlan got caught stealing third to end the Cougar's scoring threat.

The Gaucho's came out swinging in the third to make the score 8-2. With two outs and a runner on first, UCSB rallied to score five runs on clutch hitting by Josh Fulton (former Cougar who played at BYU in 1999) and Nate Sutton.

Before 137 fans at Ceasar Uyesaka Stadium, Malec continued his four-for four day with a two-RBI triple in the fourth making the score 10-2.

UCSB added two more runs in the fifth to give the Gauchos all the runs they would need.

BYU showed some life in the seventh by scoring two runs, but it wasn't enough. Jackson singled to center and stole second. Coughlan's double to left scored Jackson, and Matt Carson's single to center knocked Coughlan home to make the score 12-4.

The Cougars picked up one more run in the ninth after Ranger Wiens walked and advanced to third on a single up the middle by Kevin Bills. BYU made the score 12-5 when Jackson brought Wiens home on a sacrifice fly to right.

BYU continues its west-coast swing with a single game Tuesday afternoon at Cal Poly.

A break-out game is what BYU Coach Vance Law hopes his team can find in its final two games of its first trip to California this week.

BYU, 1-5, plays at UC Santa Barbara, 1-2, Monday followed by another single game on Tuesday at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, 5-4-1.

Jake Chrisman, 0-0, 5.40, gets his first start in a BYU uniform. The 6-8 basketball player has made nine appearances going into his second season for BYU. Pitching Tuesday for BYU will either be Jeff Stone (0-0, 7.36) or Ryan Adams (0-1, 5.73) or Jeff Mousser (1-1, 2.53).

"We want to get back on track," said Law. "I'm disappointed because I thought we would start out much better both defensively and offensively. We haven't played consistently. We've walked way too many people and we haven't swung the bats well."

Monday's game will not be available on the Internet for audiostream or livestats.

The Cougars won their first game of the season last week to start a three-game series at UC-Irvine. This is the completion of the first of three trips to California this season.
