HONOLULU, Hawai`i (February 22, 2002)--For one inning BYU held a lead Friday evening, then it was all Hawai`i as the Rainbows evened the series with a 10-5 victory.

Four Hawai`i players each batted in a pair of runs, starting with former BYU quarterback Kevin Gilbride. Gilbride's first-inning single to right field scored two in a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the first inning. By the time the inning was over, the Bows had taken a 3-1 lead they would never lose.

Cameron Coughlan extended his hitting streak to a team-leading seven games with a one-out bunt single in the first inning. Coughlan stole second and scored off Rob Itri's two-out single to right field.

Once again BYU walked a pair of batters in the third inning as UH scored three more runs to take a 7-1 lead and chase Ryan Adams from the mound.

Jake Stubblefield tied Coughlan also with a seven-game hitting streak and hit a one-out single up the middle in the fourth. Stubblefield advanced on Dave Jensen's single and scored on Ranger Wiens' single to right field. Wiens stole second, then advance to third on a catcher's error which allowed Jensen to score. Han Yi singled to center to score Wiens, making the score 7-4.

UH stopped BYU in the fifth when Matt Carson beat out a single to the mound, then was picked off in a rundown trying to steal second. BYU left one runner aboard in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings.

The Cougars got their final run in the eighth as Carson led off with a triple to right center and scored off Stubblefield's ground-out. Carson had a 12-game hitting streak going into game one of the series when he was blanked by the Bows.

Hawai`i evened its record to 6-6, while BYU falls to 4-11. The two teams conclude the three-game series on Saturday afternoon in a game which can be viewed and heard live on the Internet.
