ALBUQUERQUE -- Cameron Coughlan's two-run homer was one of the few bright spots Friday afternoon for BYU as it dropped a 12-2 decision to New Mexico.

Lobo righthander Matt Bullen threw his first complete game of the season and got his first victory. Coughlan's two-out dinger in the third inning was the only thing that tarnished the 6-5 junior's throwing performance.

"He did a nice job of keeping us off balance," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "It seems to snowball and become contagious for us yesterday and for them today. They swing the bats well."

BYU struggled, getting runners picked off in the first and second innings as UNM built a 4-0 lead before Coughlan's homer. Catcher Scott Tajima hit his first career homer in the second to put the Lobos up, 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, shortstop Ranger Wiens kept the Cougars in the game by turning a double play as the Lobos tried a double steal.

UNM put the game out of reach in the sixth when it knocked three doubles and a triple to extend its lead, 10-2. Lobos Dusty Young and Anthony Lovato each hit three doubles, including one apiece in that sixth inning.

Dave Jensen's double in the eighth inning was the only other extra base hit for BYU as the sophomore first baseman extended hit current hitting streak to six games.

The victory snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Lobos who lost 13-10 in game one of the series. UNM, now 17-21 overall and 6-8 in the Mountain West Conference, hosts BYU in the final game at Albuquerque on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. BYU now has a 15-19-1 record and is 8-5 in the MWC.
